The upcoming Easter holiday means a dramatic increase in the number of Sydney Airport flights. An estimated 2.5 million travellers will pass through the airport's terminals. The increase means nearly 130,000 more passengers will transit through the New South Wales airport this year. This uptick in numbers makes it the busiest travel season in over five years
"We're gearing up for our busiest April school holidays in six years and have boosted our staffing to assist the hundreds of thousands of passengers taking a break over Easter," Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton said.
Good Friday, April 18, will be the busiest day for international travel, with an estimated 53,000 passengers. Furthermore, 85,000 domestic travelers will pass through the airport on April 17.
Airport Upgrades to Streamline Travel
Mr Charlton said the airport would be introducing new services in anticipation of the increase in demand.
"While these improvements are underway, the journey through the airport might be a bit different than usual. We appreciate everyone's patience and wish passengers a safe and happy holiday,” Charlton said.
The Sydney airport will offer a number of holiday festivities across its terminals. such as chocolate giveaways and interactive photo booths.
To accommodate the larger volume of Sydney airport flights, the airport will have a number of measures in place. Fore example, 15 new screening lanes will be added, in addition to upgraded CT scanning technology. The scanners will to enable travellers to keep liquid and aerosol items in their carry-ons.
Mr Charlton said that over the past six months, the airport has put passengers through security in under 10 minutes on average.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics recorded an increase of 10.9 per cent in short-term trips last month. The most popular international destination was New Zealand.
More Improvements to Follow
In addition to these upgrades, there are more improvements set to follow the surge in the Sydney Airport flights. On May 1, a $200m upgrade to the T2 domestic terminal is set to begin. Renovations will include new check-in kiosks as well as streamlined protocols to enable passengers to get through security faster.
