Roblox Introduces Strict Age Checks for All Chats
Synopsis
Roblox will stop children from chatting with adult strangers through mandatory age verification starting December in Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands, expanding globally in January. The platform faces lawsuits over child safety in several US states. Users must complete facial age verification to access chat features. Players will be grouped by age and can only chat with similar age ranges. Changes come before Australia's social media ban for under 16s takes effect.
Roblox will ban children from chatting with adult strangers starting next month. That's a major change for one of the world's most popular gaming platforms. Everyone will have to verify their age before using features that include chat. The program begins in December for Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands. It expands globally in January. Roblox has been criticised over its allowance for young users to access inappropriate content and speak with adults. Various U.S. states are suing the company due to concerns over child safety.
Australia's Ban on Social Media
The new rules come just ahead of Australia banning social media for anyone under 16 years old. The government is under increasing pressure to include gaming platforms like Roblox in that ban. In March, Dave Baszucki was the CEO of Roblox. He told the BBC that parents who worry about the platform should take care of their children and not let them use it.
However, some parents and safety workers have said that even with the safety measures that Roblox already has, children can still find bad content or talk to adults. Rani Govender is an employee of the NSPCC, whose work is to keep children safe online. She said that the children are exposed to unacceptable risks on Roblox. She added that a lot of them are very vulnerable to being harmed and abused online.
The charity said they are positive about what Roblox is trying to do, and at the same time, they asked Roblox to make sure the changes actually help children. They also want the platform to prevent adult predators from just targeting and then tricking the young users. In the year 2024, over 80 million people were playing on Roblox daily. Around 40 per cent of those were under 13 years old. That is to say, millions of young children are using the platform every day.
How the Age Checks Will Work
The UK has an Online Safety Act with strict laws for all technology companies. Laws centre on protecting kids from harm online. Ofcom is the communications regulator; they ensure that companies follow the act. Anna Lucas, online safety supervision director at Ofcom, shared her feelings on the new age-checking measures. She mentioned that the platforms now needed to take steps to keep kids safe. Ofcom was ensuring that they met their responsibilities.
Roblox says it will be the first big gaming platform requiring the use of facial age verification for its features, enabling the ability to chat. Matt Kaufman, the chief safety officer for Roblox, told reporters that the technology for estimating age is pretty good. He said the system could guess within one to two years for users aged between five and 25. Right now, anyone in the world can use it if they want to. But soon it will be required.
Rules for Children of Different Ages
The users who complete the process fall into different age groups. The groups are under nine, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20 and 21 plus. Players can only chat with others in similar ranges of age ranges. The only exception will be if they add someone as a trusted connection. This feature is intended for people they already know. Kids under 13 will, however, still be blocked from private messages and some chats unless a parent says it is okay. The new approach follows worries about adults contacting younger players.
The BBC conducted a test earlier this year: it was possible for a 27-year-old user and a 15-year-old user using different devices to exchange messages. At the time, Roblox said people trying to break the rules often try to take conversations to different platforms. Age checks will use facial estimation technology through the device camera inside the Roblox app. The camera estimates how old a user is. Images get processed by an outside provider. The company says images are deleted right away after the check finishes.
Parents Can Still Control Accounts
Roblox says parents will still be able to manage their child's account. This includes updating a child's age once verification is complete. The platform already does not allow image and video sharing in chats. It also heavily restricts links to outside sites. The company says the new system will offer more age-appropriate experiences across the platform. They expect other companies to adopt similar methods.
The changes come as campaign groups ParentsTogether Action and UltraViolet stage a virtual protest inside Roblox. The changes are a result of a virtual protest organised by campaign groups ParentsTogether Action and UltraViolet inside Roblox.
It is the first time a protest of this kind has been carried out. The group is going to present a digital petition. Over 12,000 people have signed it. It demands that the platform adopt stronger child safety measures. The petition calls for big changes. It says Roblox must stop being a playground for predators.
