Queensland Mayor Lied About Military Service and Cancer

Queensland’s crime oversight agency has released its conclusions regarding former mayor Troy Thompson from Townsville, in North Queensland. The Crime and Corruption Commission probed allegations concerning his background, which Thompson asserted. The report determined that Thompson was never part of the Special Air Service Regiment as he had stated.Β

He served solely in the army reserves. The CCC also uncovered no proof that Thompson had cancer or possessed two university degrees as he claimed. The investigation did not lead to any charges. However, the oversight body urged changes to ensure candidates are honest.

Findings of the Inquiry Regarding Military Assertions

The reported issues examined by the CCC concerned claims about Thompson’s military background made in his election campaign. The commission found that Thompson had never been a member of the Australian Army’s Special Air Service Regiment, contrary to his assertions.Β

Heβ€‹β€β€‹β€Œβ€β€‹β€β€Œβ€‹β€β€‹β€Œβ€β€‹β€β€Œ was in the Australian Army for 2.5 years, as per the evidence. In that time, he was only a reservist. Thompson, in his mayoral campaign, referred to his military service. He also wore campaign badges, which insinuated that he had some military β€‹β€β€‹β€Œβ€β€‹β€β€Œβ€‹β€β€‹β€Œβ€β€‹β€β€Œbackground.

Uncovered Misleading Health Assertions

The commission also demonstrated that health assertions made by Thompson were inaccurate. Throughout his campaign, Thompson displayed banners claiming he was a cancer survivor. His statements regarding cancer changed over time. Specifically, he spoke about having suffered from oesophageal cancer. The CCC acquired copies of Thompson’s files. None of these documents indicated a diagnosis of cancer or any related treatment. The sole references appeared to be from Thompson’s reports to physicians.

The commission uncovered no proof verifying that Thompson has been diagnosed with epilepsy or experiences it. Thompson had consistently asserted that he had epilepsy. However, medical documents did not back up these assertions.

Sharing Privileged Council Information

CCC discovered that Thompson deliberately shared information with an unauthorised advisor, who was compensated by Thompson personally. During the investigation, CCC investigators found 32 instances where Thompson revealed council emails and information, sending the documents through either his encrypted WhatsApp account or his personal email.

Inβ€‹β€β€‹β€Œβ€β€‹β€β€Œβ€‹β€β€‹β€Œβ€β€‹β€β€Œ that time, the advisor seemed to be merely giving advice to Thompson. By that, it involved the preparation of letters, emails, and media statements. Besides that, the advisor also gave some instructions or advice. The CCC found out that Thompson communicated with the advisor, supplying him/her with some documents, among them those concerning the recruitment process for the permanent CEO position.Β

Theβ€‹β€β€‹β€Œβ€β€‹β€β€Œβ€‹β€β€‹β€Œβ€β€‹β€β€Œ report being made public is the result of the 18-month period of upheaval at Townsville City Council. After the Anzac Day event, Thompson went against the pressure of resigning. Even though he was suspended, he continued to attack Townsville City Council. According to Thompson, the CEO, state lawmakers and other councillors working together were a conspiracy to get rid of β€‹β€β€‹β€Œβ€β€‹β€β€Œβ€‹β€β€‹β€Œβ€β€‹β€β€Œhim.

No Criminal Charges But Calls for Reform

In a declaration, the CCC mentioned that its probe into Thompson did not lead to any accusations being filed. Nevertheless, the report suggested that the state government reconsider local government regulations. This involved implementing penalties for candidates who submit details. The report highlights important concerns, such as the necessity for more robust mechanisms to ensure honesty, among electoral candidates.Β

Improved identification and control of deceptive information are essential. Proper management of documents is also required. Thompson rejected any wrongdoing following the findings. He asserted that he has not engaged in any illegal actions. Thompson stated he has held this stance since the beginning.
