Nicholas Reece and Roshena Campbell- The Lord Mayor and Deputy Team Transforming Melbourne-01

I’m hungry for the job, and I’m hungry to work hard every single day to deliver for Melburnians.

Nicholas Reece

A New Era in Melbourne’s Leadership

In a decisive victory that marks a new chapter for Melbourne’s leadership, Nicholas Reece has been elected as the city’s Lord Mayor, securing 20,523 primary votes and 61.5% of the vote after preferences. The triumph follows an engaging campaign season that included notable events such as the Lord Mayor’s Business Debate, hosted by Inspirepreneur Magazine and sponsored by La Cabra Restaurant on October 18, 2024.

During the high-profile debate, Deputy Lord Mayor Roshena Campbell represented Team Reece, joining other candidates including Jamal Hakim, Aroon Wood, Gary Morgan, and Deputy Lord Mayor Intaj Khan (representing Anthony Koutoufides). The event, skillfully moderated by Karim Boktor, provided a crucial platform for candidates to present their visions for Melbourne’s business community.

Commitment to Streamlining Business

Campbell, who has now secured her position as Deputy Lord Mayor alongside Reece, delivered a compelling presentation at the debate, emphasising Team Reece’s commitment to streamlining business processes and reducing bureaucratic hurdles. “The time it took to start a business at the start of my Council term was 8 months; that’s now down to 4 months,” Campbell noted during the event, highlighting one of their key achievements.

“I will build a Melbourne that is cleaner and greener, safer and more prosperous,” Reece declared following his victory. “I’m hungry for the job, and I’m hungry to work hard every single day to deliver for Melburnians.”

Innovative Initiatives Under Team Reece

The Team Reece platform, which resonated strongly with voters, includes several innovative initiatives:

  • Deployment of 30 city safety officers across Melbourne’s crime hot spots
  • Installation of 200 additional security cameras at a cost of $13.65 million
  • Implementation of a rates freeze while maintaining budget surplus
  • Introduction of the “Empower” program for collective energy purchasing
  • Conversion of old CBD office buildings into 4,000 apartment units

Deputy Lord Mayor Campbell, a barrister by profession and mother of four, brings a unique perspective to the leadership team. During the Inspirepreneur Magazine debate, she emphasised her journey from migrant roots to Melbourne success story, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a place of opportunity.

The Lord Mayor’s Business Debate, which brought together Melbourne’s business community and political leaders, proved to be a pivotal moment in the campaign season. The event showcased the candidates’ commitment to fostering innovation and addressing the challenges facing Melbourne’s business sector.

Addressing Social and Environmental Commitments

Looking ahead, Team Reece faces significant challenges, including implementing their ambitious $6 million commitment to the Salvation Army and $3.2 million to Melbourne City Mission for addressing homelessness. The administration has also promised to tackle environmental initiatives, including the development of twenty-eight new parks and the innovative “Light up Melbourne” policy, allocating $8 million for designer decorative lighting in 20 laneways.

The election results, which saw Reece triumph over Greens candidate Roxane Ingleton (38.5% after preferences), reflect strong support for Team Reece’s balanced approach to business growth, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility. The new administration will lead Melbourne through 2028, with a clear mandate to implement their comprehensive platform for city development.

Inspirepreneur Magazine will continue to follow the implementation of Team Reece’s initiatives and provide ongoing coverage of Melbourne’s development under the new leadership. Stay tuned for our exclusive interview series with the new administration in upcoming issues.
