A west Sydney Mormon church has been gutted by a fire in the early hours of Monday morning. Firefighters had gone to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Hebersham just before 3 am after it was reported there was a large fire engulfing the complex. There were reports that the three parts of the complex were alight, with images of high flames and them being very prominent on the road and visible to residents in the area. Fire and Rescue NSW Inspector Steve Perkins said they found the building’s administration section well alight when the crew arrived on the scene.
Firefighters Save Part of Church From Total Destruction
Up to 120 staff members were employed to fight the fire, and Inspector Perkins credited their efforts in preventing the fire from spreading to sections of the church. He said fire officials did an enormous amount of good work in trying to deprive the fire of accessing the main auditorium and chapel area of the churc,h and were able to accomplish that. The latest news from Australia reports this was a major emergency response with dozens of fire trucks and crews from all around the area.
The greater part of the church was destroyed by the fire, even as attempts were made to extinguish it. Perkins said that they were able to save a great portion of the structure, but the administration wing appears to have been the hardest hit. Images from the scene showed massive flames engulfsbillowing up into the air, and thick smoke billowing out of the building for multiple blocks.
No Injuries Reported as Cause Under Investigation
No one was in the church when it caught on fire, and firefighters say all members of the church are accounted for. This was a blessing considering how bad the fire was and the fact that three fires were burning in various parts of the building. The timing was early enough that the church was empty when the fire started.
The source of the fire is being investigated by authorities at this time. Fire investigators will need to investigate the scene once it can be entered safely and determine how the fire started and what sparked it. Because there are fires burning in three different areas of the complex, investigators will be looking at whether the fires started separately or whether one fire had ignited other areas to create multiple fire zones. The community is left waiting for answers about what led to this significant loss of a local place of worship.
