Videos taken by villages nearby show a large wave of brown water rushing through the streets in the center of the village. The cloudburst in India happened at around 1:30 PM local time, and villagers say they had no time to escape because the flood came so quickly. 

While rescue teams are on the ground, heavy rain is still falling, making the research and rescue work more difficult. Communication is poor in the area due to bad weather and rain. Officials also say they’re trying to stay in touch with teams and get more help from the ground. The cloudburst has shocked the people in the region, especially Dharali, since it’s a place of many hotels and is close to an Indian Army base.

Ancient Temple Damaged, Artificial Lake Formed 

The Kalpkedar temple, a historic site in the area, is believed to be buried under thick mud and may be damaged. The floods have blocked the Bhagirathi River, which becomes the holy river Ganges’ stream. This has created an artificial lake, which has now flooded nearby land, including a government helipad. 

Experts are worried that if the water is not drained out soon, it could cause even more flooding in towns and villages below. PM Modi also shared his sympathy with those affected on his social media.
