The families affected by the attack that happened in Bondi Beach, in which lives were lost, are now demanding the formation of a large investigation, known as a Royal Commission, from the Prime Minister. They are demanding “strong action” in order for no more lives to be lost in the process, and this is from families affected by the incident, a total of seventeen out of them all.
Their strong letter asks for the formation of an immediate national investigation. This national investigation should examine why the hatred of Jewish people has increased so rapidly in Australia following the large attack in October 2023. Another aspect of this national investigation requested by the family includes any errors caused by security agencies and government policies that led to the death in Bondi Beach.
The families have very clearly expressed that they want to understand the causes behind the tragedy. The question is raised about why warning signs for the tragedy did not receive due attention, and how the spread of hate based on religion and extremism was left unchecked and unchecked. The families made it very clear that this has become a burden beyond any Australian to bear, as their children cannot feel safe in schools, nor can they feel safe at their workplaces/public areas.
Government Resisting National Inquiry
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had, until now, been resisting the call to conduct a countrywide Royal Commission over the attack. He maintains that a probe led by the state administration in New South Wales will suffice to investigate the required territory. He assured that the federal administration will give the state administration its full support in their investigation of the incident.
The Prime Minister has established a detailed panel in the union, which is only looking at the security and the domestic intelligence agencies, in order to make sure they have not overlooked something in relation to the recent attack at Bondi Beach. The Prime Minister has indicated that he does not wish to foment dissent and holdups in the country, and that he is going to proceed quickly, together with everyone.
The Prime Minister drew loud disapproval when he appeared in the memorial service for the victims on the National Day of Reflection. The anger that the Jewish community felt that evening, mixed with their pain, is obvious. Now, it is the families who are urging further action in the open letter they are attempting as they beg the leader of the nation to take immediate action.
Antisemitism is a concern of the Whole Country. The families drew attention to the fact that there are very influential people in the fields of law, security, and politics across the country who have openly expressed their agreement on the establishment of a national Commonwealth Royal Commission.
The families have clearly stated that “the increase of hatred of Jewish people in Australia is a crisis and a problem more than just a local issue.” To show that the danger is still there, the families highlighted that in fact, in the last few days alone, there have been other acts of hatred.
These include an arrest in Western Australia of a man who was charged with sending messages in support of the Bondi attack and had weapons and flags of extreme groups. Another was a car of a Jewish family that was set alight in Melbourne. The families concluded their plea by stating that this threat is a serious one and one that is escalating rapidly. These are the families’ beliefs on the situation.
