Australian Treasury Wine Settles U.S. Distributor Fight

Synopsis

Australia’s largest winemaker, Treasury Wine Estates, has finally cleared a big hurdle in the United States. The company, on Tuesday said it had resolved a messy dispute with its California distributor, RNDC, while raising its outlook for the first half of the year. Investors cheered the news, sending shares on their biggest jump in more than a year. Amid continued struggles in China, the deal enables the maker of Penfolds to reset its American business and concentrate on premium growth.

MELBOURNE — Investors in Treasury Wine Estates (TWE) celebrated a vintage day on the stock market Tuesday. The company’s shares rose more than 8%, their largest one-day gain since 2024, after news that it has settled a protracted dispute with its major U.S. distributor, Republic National Distributing Company (RNDC).

The settlement puts a bookend on what had been an uncertain time for the winemaker in California. TWE has agreed to repurchase its inventory from RNDC at the original sale price, less a confidential payout to resolve the dispute. Now that the deal is in place, TWE will shift its California business to a new partner, Reyes Beverage Group, leaving RNDC with less than 20% of its U.S. sales.

A Surprise Boost to Earnings

Accompanying the legal settlement, Treasury Wine delivered the market some welcome good news about its bank account. The company lifted its earnings guidance for the first half to $236 million. Although that remained below the record levels of a year ago, it was higher than what many analysts had been predicting.

CEO Sam Fischer said the disruption in California had been a “material” drag on the company’s performance over the past six months. By dealing with the issue now, the company is signalling that the worst of the American “inventory clog” is behind it. TWE remains cautious, however, and is closely monitoring the market to avoid oversupplying its premium wines.

The China Market Is Still Difficult

While the American update was positive, Treasury Wine continues to face a “perfect storm” in China. For years, China was the most profitable market for its flagship brand, Penfolds, but changing consumer habits have slowed wine consumption.

According to industry data younger Chinese consumers are moving away from traditional red wine toward spirits and non-alcoholic options. Slower sales have left large volumes of Penfolds sitting in warehouses, limiting the ability to ship newer, higher-margin vintages.

A softer Chinese economy has reduced demand for luxury wines such as Penfolds Grange.

What’s Next for Penfolds?

Treasury Wine is now doubling down on a “quality over quantity” strategy. Rather than pushing volume through cheaper labels, the company is prioritising its Luxury and Premium ranges, which deliver stronger margins and more loyal customers.

The shift away from RNDC in California is central to this plan. With a new distributor, TWE aims to place its wines in more high-end restaurants and specialty retailers across the United States. While the global wine sector is navigating a tough period, Tuesday’s share price surge suggests investors believe Treasury Wine has found the right blend to steady the business.
