OpenAI Burned $3.7 Billion in First Quarter of 2026, Report Says
The Information reports OpenAI spend $3.7 billion in Q1 2026 alone In the same time frame, the company had revenue of $5.7 billion and saw spending along with revenue triple year over year. OpenAI, for instance, just rounded up dozens of billions in new cash and marketable securities over the most recent quarter (and thus much more from different pores including funding), leaving it perfectly capitalized to outlast its many competitors in the developing artificial intelligence sphere.
OpenAI has revealed via documents shared with shareholders that they generated $5.7 billion in revenue for the first quarter of 2026 but still spent $3.7 billion, reports The Information. According to the report, revenue and cash burn tripled from a year over year since many artificial intelligence products have high costs of building and scaling them.
Cash Balance Bolstered After Fundraising
OpenAI wrapped the quarter with over $73 billion in cash and marketable securities, from $40 billion at December 31. It comes after the company revealed a hefty funding round in late March. The company's cash position means it also does not expect to need further funding in the near term, assuming that spending remains at similar levels, the report said.
Pricing Strategy Could Pressure Finances
The report claims that OpenAI wants to reduce AI prices and catch up with rival Anthropic. While the move may strengthen its competitive position it may also put pressure on the company's finances as it is bankrolling growth and expansion.
