eBay Posts Better-Then-Expected Q1, Guides To Stronger Q2
eBay beat Q1 revenue estimates ($3.09 billion vs $3.04 billion expected) and guided for Q2 revenue between $2.97 billion and $3.03 billion, ahead of the Street average estimate. Gross merchandise volume, the total value of goods sold on the platform, climbed 18% to $22.2 billion in the quarter, a strong indicator of underlying platform health.
CEO Jamie Iannone said the result was driven by strong growth in collectibles, trading cards, toys, action figures and fashion with the sale of its motors, parts and accessories business accounting for almost two percentage points of growth on its own.
Why eBay has been Faring Better than Other Retailers
The fact that eBay tends to focus on second-hand goods and non-new season items also makes the business structurally more resilient in down economic cycles, Iannone said. “When household incomes are squeezed, consumers find value from eBay,” he said. It is an increasingly relevant positioning as cost-of-living pressures globally, and in Australia, too, where second-hand and value-focused platforms have been gathering traffic. The company is in the midst of a broader product overhaul, and analysts see rising user engagement as a pivotal component of momentum into FY 2026.
Sellers React to the Fact that AI is Changing the Way eBay Does Business
Some eBay AI tools help with buyer/seller communication on their platform. To date, its AI-enhanced Magical Listings tool, which aims to simplify and speed up the process of product listings for sellers, has helped drive an over 50% (and growing) increase in new listings on this platform. The company has been using AI to enhance messaging between buyers and sellers as well. A higher listing or supply leads to more buyers coming back, which eBay hopes will continue growing even when consumer spending, in general, remains squeezed.
