Carlsberg moves closer to $700M India IPO filing
Synopsis
Carlsberg is preparing draft papers for a potential India IPO that could raise up to $700 million. The brewer's Indian business generated around ₹9,000 crore in FY2025 revenue and operates in one of Asia's largest beer markets, attracting growing attention from international investors and capital markets.
Carlsberg is expected to submit draft filings this month for the public flotation of its Indian business, which could be one of the biggest consumer-sector IPO's in India this year and potentially raise $700m.
The IPO would be a primarily an offer for sale by its parent company, and the documents could be filed in June but still depend on regulatory clearance and market conditions.
A listing is expected given that many multinational consumer businesses are increasingly investing in India as economic growth and the large population fuel demand for their food, beverage and retail products.
Key market in Asia
India is Carlsberg’s second-largest market in Asia and its second-largest behind Europe. It holds an estimated 22% market share, through well-known brands such as Carlsberg and Tuborg. Carlsberg India reported revenue figures of about 9,000 crore for the year ending March 2025, according to reports.
For international investors, this is just another example of international companies unlocking value in India. They are no longer happy with slow growth from mature markets such as Europe and North America and instead are looking at the Indian consumer markets.
Brewing industry focus
According to industry estimates India consumes in excess of 400 million cases of beer every year and has one of the biggest beer markets in Asia behind China.
This is different to many developed markets such as some parts of Europe, which have seen weaker demand, and consumer spending change during recent years. Carlsberg has reportedly appointed Kotak Mahindra Capital, JPMorgan and Citigroup for advising the offer.
The group confirmed the possibility of a listing for the Indian operations, which is currently being assessed by the company's Chief Executive Jacob Aarup-Andersen.
