Synopsis

Amazon drops film about OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, despite recently expanding relationship with AI firm in just months. Directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Andrew Garfield, the film is currently being pitched to other streaming services and studios.

After expanding its relationship with OpenAI earlier this year, Amazon has now pulled the plug on its film Artificial about the martech giant and CEO Sam Altman.

The star of the film, Andrew Garfield, was directed by Luca Guadagnino. The film was nearly finished and had even screen-tested, according to reports, before Amazon MGM Studios pulled the plug.

Amazon says film will be better served at other distributors

Amazon expressed high regard for Guadagnino in a statement and said it hoped to collaborate again with him moving forward. The company said it felt that Artificial should be in better hands at a new studio and is collaborating with the filmmaking team to find another home for the movie. The film is said to have already been pitched to other studios and streaming services.

Decision Comes Months After Partnership With OpenAI

Amazon is making the move four months after its cloud computing platform, Amazon Web Services (AWS), joined forces with OpenAI as a strategic partner for development of generative AI applications and agents at scale.

The other component of the deal was to build Amazon-specific AI models for its customer-facing applications. The deal was said to include another $50 billion investment from Amazon on top of an already-covert eight-year contract worth over $100 billion between the two companies.

Artificial paints Altman in a traditionally unsympathetic and ungenerous light on the heels of Amazon extending its partnership with OpenAI, something that likely did not make it easier for the studio to support the project at this time, according to Variety.

The film’s cast also includes Garfield, Monica Barbaro, Yura Borisov, Cooper Hoffman and Jason Schwartzman and Mark Rylance as well as Ike Barinholtz who is said to play Elon Musk.
