South Koreans Rejoice As Yoon Suk Yeol Ousted

After a long protracted court case, South Koreans are celebrating with jubilation. The National Court finally removed Yoon Suk Yeol, the suspended President of the country, after weeks of court hearings today. Many Koreans feared for the future of their democracy, but finally those fears can be put to rest.

The genesis of this protracted saga came last December, when in the middle of the night Yeol declared martial law across the country. Many saw this as an attempted coup and radically opposed the measure. Opposition lawmakers were quick to respond as the National Assembly blocked the action just hours later.

The Ruling

South Korea’s top court voted unanimously to dismiss the country’s Yoon Suk Yeol, on Friday. Broadcast live across the nation, Acting Chief Justice Moon Hyung-bae delivered the court’s unanimous decision, stating, “We hereby rule, with the full agreement of all Justices, to dismiss President Yoon Suk Yeol from office.”

As the crowd outside listened with bated breath, Moon explained that Yoon had overstepped the constitutional powers granted to him as president, violating his duties and posing a serious threat to democracy.

“President Yoon betrayed the trust of the people, the true sovereigns of our democratic republic,” Moon declared. He emphasised that Yoon’s declaration of martial law had plunged the nation into chaos, disrupting society, the economy, and foreign relations.

The Aftermath

Anti-Yoon protesters celebrated the court’s decision with many of them in tears, South Korean media reports said some of his supporters had started damaging police vehicles near the court building.

Acting President Han Duck-soo will stay in office and South Korea will hold fresh elections within 60 days. On the other hand, Yoon Suk Yeol on the other hand now faces criminal charges that could culminate in life in prison. Or perhaps even the death penalty although Korea has not executed anyone since the 1990s however.
