Putin Says Peace Negotiations Possible But Only on Russia’s Terms

Russian President Vladimir Putin is open to negotiating peace with Ukraine, but only if Russia’s paramount objectives in the conflict are attained, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Sunday. The remarks come as global pressure grows on both Moscow and Kyiv to resume the negotiations table.

Kremlin Insists Objectives Must Be Met Before Negotiations Proceed

During an interview on TV, Peskov indicated that Putin continues to believe in ending the war via peaceful means. “The president has always expressed his readiness for peace, but not at the expense of our national interests,” Peskov stated. He refused to identify what those are, but Russia has been insisting for years that Ukraine relinquish claims to four regions it partially occupies and cease any bid to become part of NATO.

The statement implies that, though the Kremlin is not slamming the door on diplomacy, it wants Ukraine to agree to significant territorial and security concessions. It also comes in the wake of increased criticism of the war by Russia’s foreign trading partners, as well as domestic economic strain.

Ukraine Calls for Immediate Talks to Secure Ceasefire

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during a weekend address, informed that his government had officially invited Russian leaders to fresh peace negotiations next week. The proposal is the first in an effort since negotiations collapsed in June. Zelensky’s administration states that the objective is to win a complete ceasefire and prevent further loss of civilian lives.

Russia needs to stop hiding behind decisions,” Zelensky stated. He underlined that Ukraine is still ready to talk, but refused any offer to give up the occupied territory. Past negotiations resulted in prisoner exchanges but accomplished nothing in negotiating a halt to the war.

Trump Imposes 50-Day Ceasefire Deadline, Raises Pressure

Adding to the pressure, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a 50-day deadline to Russia to accept a ceasefire or new sanctions. He has pledged additional military assistance to Ukraine, including advanced air-defense systems. Trump’s ultimatum provoked a mixed response in Moscow.

It has been described as “unacceptable” by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and queried by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov over its effectiveness. Politicians’ bluster aside, the Russian summer military campaign in Ukraine’s eastern provinces has continued, and Russia conducted airstrikes in a number of cities during the weekend.
