Can Scottish Scheffler Be Even Better in 2026?
Synopsis
Scottie Scheffler 2026 has coasted to a victory finishing the tournament 27-under and capturing his career 20th on the PGA Tour. The dominant victory extends his amazing current trajectory and puts him in elite company with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only players to reach 20 wins along with four major championships before turning 30. With his first full offseason in a few years of working out from the ground up, Scheffler’s great ball-striking and hot putter could lead him to an even better season than those record-breakers.
Scottie Scheffler 2026 has won The American Express tournament in California on Sunday. The world’s No. 1-ranked golfer shot a 27 under-par total to win his 20th career PGA Tour title by four shots. The dominating display was his seventh win in just 13 stroke-play events, and continues his record-making progress, though already glittering gold, now sees him level with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods in the golf records.
Historic Win at PGA WEST
Scheffler ended up 27-under over 72 holes at PGA WEST on the Nicklaus Tournament Course in La Quinta, California, well clear of his playing partners Si Woo Kim and Blades Brown. The tournament became a back-nine exhibition as other contenders folded while Scheffler seemed to grow stronger with each hole.
His only glaring mistake on the day was hitting his tee shot into the water on the famed island par-3 17th hole. The gaffe may have kept him from getting to 30-under par, but there was no consequence on an outcome that had long been decided. Scheffler’s potent mix of fine ball-striking and newfound confidence around the hole was too much for the rest of his competition at the four-day event.
Joining Golf’s Greatest Names
This triumph makes Scheffler the third player to have at least 20 PGA Tour victories, four or more of them major championships, before reaching his 30th birthday. Only two other players have done that, icons, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, so Scheffler joins some scarce company.
The victory also secured Scheffler's lifetime membership on the PGA Tour, a testament to his sustained excellence. Since he first won the 2022 WM Phoenix Open, he has had 11 more victories than the next closest player in that span with Rory McIlroy.
What should also be significant is that Scheffler enters 2026 healthy and ready to go, unlike last year, when his season was held back by a hand injury and early-season performance. The full offseason work seems to have instant benefits.
Numbers That Tell the Story
- Seventh win in his last 13 stroke-play events represents phenomenal consistency at the highest level of professional golf
- 20th career victory won lifetime PGA Tour membership, putting him in the elite company of Nicklaus and Woods
- 27-under par total showcased a complete game with strong putting and ball-striking all four rounds
What Are The Experts Saying
“You look at last year, it’s different just because I felt like I had made so much progress in the offseason with what I was working on, and then to have that basically taken away by four to six weeks of not playing golf, that has an effect,” Scheffler said about the difference proper preparation makes.
“Every time he plays, it seems like he’s right around there near the lead. That is one of the hardest things to do, always to be so hungry that you’re never satisfied,” former world No.1 Jason Day said on what sets Scheffler apart from the game’s established elite.
The Journey to Dominance
Scheffler has been a force in professional golf over the past three seasons, winning 13 times in 2024 and 2025 even while confronting obstacles. In 2024, he was still tweaking his putting with coach Phil Kenyon. He failed to completely master his new claw-grip putting style until early 2025, at a point when he was already sidelined with a hand injury that disrupted his preparation and delayed him reaching the peak of his form until May.
The current version of Scheffler is probably the first 100 per cent healthy and fully prepared version of himself at a season-opener since he reached No.1. His ability to win on any kind of course, from 9 under to over 30 under, makes him a threat whenever he plays.
Looking Ahead to Major Season
Scheffler will make his next start at TPC Scottsdale, a different challenge than PGA WEST. He now has a difficult schedule coming up with Bay Hill, TPC Sawgrass and Augusta National over the next few months, all courses where he is a multiple winner.
The question facing the golf world is whether he can maintain a single-minded sense of commitment. His relatively lean corporate commitment, allows him to spend more time practising than most competitors have the luxury of.
