Over the past two decades, solar energy has been beating expectations at every turn, becoming the world’s fastest-growing energy source. Machine learning models are helping us visualise the sheer scale of this shift, with data showing record-breaking growth in solar farm installations. This isn’t just a technological story — it’s a global one, encompassing countries like China, Pakistan, India, the US, and Australia.
How Solar Became the World’s Cheapest Energy Source
What’s behind this explosion of solar power? It increasingly comes down to one factor — cost. Solar energy is now the most affordable way to generate electricity, and its price per kilowatt has plummeted faster than even the boldest predictions.
The roots of this revolution can be traced back to a university lab in Sydney in 1983. Professor Martin Green and his team at UNSW brought passivated emitter and rear cell (PERC) technology to life, dramatically increasing the efficiency of solar cells. Over three decades, their innovations held the record for efficiency, shaping the industry and paving the way for the solar boom we see today.
Powered by these technological advancements, solar panels became cheaper, smoother to mass-produce, and commercially viable for residences, businesses, and industrial-scale projects. Prices fell, adoption surged, and the market accelerated. "Just about every projection that's been made for solar has been exceeded by reality," Professor Green notes, emphasising the pace of change.
A Global Energy Boom in Numbers
Today, solar power provides roughly 5% of global electricity. Yet, this is merely the beginning. If current rates of growth hold, experts predict solar could provide 12% of electricity within three years and nearly half of global electricity within a decade. That’s an astonishing leap — one no energy technology has achieved this quickly before.
Kingsmill Bond of the Rocky Mountain Institute frames it this way: the amount of time it takes solar to grow from 5% to 80% of the energy mix is the same as its leap from 0.5% to 5%. "You don’t notice it until it gets to 5%, and then from 5% to 80% is actually quite quick," he observes.
But who are the key players in this energy transformation? To answer that, we need to take a closer look at the countries shaping this revolution.
China Leads the Way
China, a nation historically reliant on coal, now stands as the powerhouse behind the solar boom. Beginning its renewable pivot about a decade ago, China’s transformation is nothing short of remarkable. By 2023, the nation installed more solar capacity than the rest of the world combined, building enormous installations in its sparsely populated west and north.
An example of this ambition can be seen in Golmud Solar Park in Qinghai Province. Its capacity? An eye-watering 2.2GW — comparable to two coal-fired power plants. Yet, this massive installation represents less than 1% of China’s solar output.
China’s influence goes beyond domestic infrastructure. The nation produces 80% of the world’s solar panels, fuelling projects across the globe. Panels have become so accessible that they’re now utilised in unexpected ways, such as garden fencing in Europe. This oversupply has driven costs even lower, enabling further adoption worldwide.
Pakistan’s Rooftop Revolution
While China leads in large-scale farms, Pakistan has quietly led an unconventional solar trend. Despite limited government coordination, gigawatts of solar modules have flooded into Pakistan, many finding their way onto residential rooftops.
Teams at BloombergNEF and Atlas Maps unveiled this surprising development, showing a “bottom-up” approach to solar adoption. Behind each panel lies an individual or family making the choice to invest in clean energy. This grass-roots movement highlights how solar power transcends central planning, enabling countries to leapfrog traditional energy systems.
India’s Subsidised Solar Push
Across the border, India’s solar story is government-led. Massive arrays sprawl across deserts, powered by subsidies and national plans to reduce dependency on fossil fuels.
India's Adani Group is constructing the Khavda Renewable Energy Park, which will be five times the size of Paris and power over 16 million homes. The scale of investment highlights how solar is no longer a secondary energy source. Even corporate giants traditionally associated with coal are betting on solar’s future — an indicator of how fossil fuels are facing "terminal decline," as experts like Tim Buckley put it.
Solar Transforms the United States
The US solar boom showcases how renewable energy is remaking energy grids. California has led the way, utilising solar during the day and storing excess energy in batteries to meet evening demand peaks. And it’s not just California — Texas, traditionally an oil-stronghold, has seen solar overtake coal in energy generation.
This dynamic — solar by day, batteries by night — is defining the United States’ clean energy transformation. Solar disrupted the fossil fuel reliance of the last decade; batteries are poised to be the disruption of the next.
Australia’s Paradox of Potential
Down under, Australia is a land of solar opportunity with vast sunshine and pioneering research. Yet, ironically, large-scale projects have struggled to take off due to political challenges. Nevertheless, Australia leads the world in rooftop solar, with 10% of the grid powered by residential installations. This grassroots effort reinforces the global insight that even when large-scale actions falter, the affordability and ease of solar allow households to lead the charge.
A Future Built on Solar
Though solar farms and panels span nearly 19,000 square kilometres globally — about a third of Tasmania’s size — the land required for global solar energy generation remains surprisingly modest. Solar’s flexibility lets it flourish in everything from small suburban rooftops to sprawling urban car parks.
This flexibility and scalability bring hope to countries in the global south, where many are already outpacing developed nations in renewable adoption. It’s clear that cheap, local energy is irresistible to economies across the planet.
Solar energy is no longer about potential. It’s happening. Whether on massive industrial farms or individual rooftops, solar is fundamentally rewriting how we power our world.
