McMillon's decision to step down came sooner than anticipated, and he has become one of the longest-serving CEOs in company history. He joined Walmart in 1984 as an hourly associate and rose through the ranks to become CEO of Walmart in February 2014, replacing Mike Duke.
He took over from Mike Duke in February 2014 during the time when Walmart was playing catch-up to online sales giant Amazon.com, which was rapidly capturing a share of the booming consumer demand for ecommerce.
Aiming to boost income, McMillan worked on the firm's vast store footprint to speed up deliveries, incorporate automation technology at warehouses, and expanded its marketplace.
Ever since he took the job, McMillan helped Walmart increasing its market value triped at its current $817 billion with his ecommerce efforts. Warmart global ecommerce sales had just surpassed $10 billion when McMillan took over, and in January 2025, the figure had surpassed $120 billion.
GlobalData Managing Director, Neil Saunders, said that under McMillan's tenure Walmart has performed very well, by integrating new technologies to improve efficiency.
About New Walmart CEO:
McMillon will be replaced by 51-years-old Juhn Furner, who will be only the sixth person to lead the company.
Expert have mentioned that Furner is taking over the role when the firm has started to adopt artificial intelligence tools that are changing how retailers operate. The firm claimed that Furner is uniquely capable of leading the company through this next AI-driven transformation and is the logical choice.
In his current role as CEO of Walmart’s US business, he oversees more than 4,600 stores and the largest sector of the company.
