Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney is being heavily criticized for extending an invitation to India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the G7 summit despite Canadian police investigations into India's involvement in altercation of a Sikh activist on Canadian territory.
Ongoing Investigation Into Sikh Activist
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a well-known Sikh activist, was involved in an altercation last year in Surrey, British Columbia. The Canadian federal police determined that the occurrences were commanded by the "highest levels" of the government of India. Four Indian citizens residing in Canada have been arrested in relation to the situation.
The event totally ruined the relationship between India and Canada. Both nations expelled one another's senior diplomats, and Canada charged India with extortion, gang violence, and intimidation plots.
PM Defends His Decision
Reporters asked Carney whether he believes Modi was involved in the Nijjar case. Carney wouldn't directly answer. According to him, there is a pending case, and it would be inappropriate to comment on it.
Carney justified his invitation by referring to India's global significance. He described India as the fifth-largest economy in the world, the most populous country in the world, and a critical player in supply chains. The three-day summit will be dedicated to energy, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals.
The G7 leaders' meeting is scheduled from June 15-17 in Kananaskis, Alberta, with leaders from the major world powers attending.
Sikh Community Outraged
The World Sikh Organization condemned the move by Carney, labeling it as a betrayal of Canadian values. Its president, Danish Singh, termed the invitation shameful and risky given that India is still denying its role in the incident and refusing to assist Canadian authorities.
Singh spoke about how Canada will never host leaders of Russia, China, or Iran under the same circumstances, while India has done worse things on Canadian soil and yet is being rewarded with red carpet treatment.
Rebuilding International Relations
Carney's action is timely as his new administration attempts to mend strained relations with various nations. He has just met with China's premier to discuss better communication following a trade war that had cost both nations billions of dollars in tariffs on various goods.
The prime minister is also directly negotiating with US President Donald Trump to settle trade wars that have damaged both economies through tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
