Synopsis

Elon Musk’s 48.4% stake in SpaceX is valued at more than $900 billion, according to a recent regulatory filing which highlights his continued control following the company’s record-breaking IPO.

Elon Musk owned a 48.4% stake in SpaceX as of 30 June, according to a regulatory filing released on Thursday, giving him a holding worth more than US$900 billion based on the company's current market value.

The disclosure comes two months after SpaceX made its blockbuster stock market debut and raised US$85.7 billion in what became the largest IPO on record.

Although SpaceX's valuation has eased from its post-listing peak, Musk continues to maintain overwhelming influence through his voting rights. The filing showed he controls 6.42 billion shares and holds more than 82% of the company's voting power that reinforces his position as SpaceX's dominant shareholder.

Investors have renewed interest in SpaceX after its first quarterly earnings as a listed firm showed strong revenue growth and increased investment in future expansion.

Regulatory Filing Details Musk's Ownership

The filing revealed that Musk's ownership consists of multiple classes of shares held both personally and through trusts where he serves as trustee.

His stake includes 849.5 million Class A shares, 3.92 billion Class B shares held through trusts, 1.30 billion restricted Class B shares and an additional 350 million Class B shares that can be acquired through stock options.

Despite owning less than half of the company's equity, Musk retains more than 82% of SpaceX's voting power which gives him effective control over corporate decisions.

Shares Recover after Earnings Despite Valuation Pullback

SpaceX completed its public listing on 12 June, raising US$85.7 billion and briefly pushing its market capitalisation above US$2 trillion. However, investor enthusiasm cooled in the weeks that followed with the stock falling nearly 33% through the end of July.

The shares have since rebounded by around 30% in August, supported by stronger than expected quarterly results and the expiry of the first lock-up restrictions which allowed some early investors to sell shares.

The company recently reported its first quarterly earnings since going public, posting more than 90% year-on-year revenue growth alongside a sharp increase in capital expenditure as it continued investing in its space, satellite and artificial intelligence businesses.

The recovery highlights continued investor confidence in SpaceX despite the volatility that often follows major IPOs. With Musk maintaining decisive control and the company investing heavily in future growth, SpaceX remains one of the world's most closely watched technology and aerospace businesses.
