Synopsis

The retailer's new Anko-branded wearable lowers the cost of AI-powered smart glasses and image recognition tools.

Kmart has launched Anko smart glasses in Australia for $89, expanding its consumer electronics range with one of the country's lowest-priced AI-enabled wearable devices.

The product adds capabilities that are usually found in more expensive smart glasses, such as hands-free still-image capture, Bluetooth audio, and visual recognition with AI capabilities.

The glasses feature an embedded camera for taking photos and videos, as well as built-in speakers for audio input and output. They also have voice-activated capabilities, which are controlled via an attached smartphone app.

The device has been designed to look like standard eyewear but with connected capabilities which are part of the emerging smart glasses class.

Chapter one

Affordable Wearables Gain Momentum

Kmart's introduction coincides with the growing interest in smart glasses in the global market from technology firms as well as retailers. In recent months, AI wearables have been a focus of investment by a range of companies such as Samsung, Google, and Xiaomi, as the industry moves to incorporate AI into everyday consumer gadgets.

AI smart glasses shipments hit more than double in 2025, with demand for lightweight designs that feature cameras, voice assistance and audio, driving much of the growth, according to market research firm Counterpoint Research. Meta's smart Ray-Ban eyepiece is still the top-selling product in the segment.

Chapter two

Retail Strategy Broadens Technology Offering

For Kmart, the release is part of its extension of its connected technology and personal technology accessories portfolio under the Anko brand.

The new smart glasses option is also an effort to make a technology that has been largely held by premium technology firms more affordable to consumers, as there are many competing smart glasses products on the market to cost several hundred dollars.

AI-based wearable devices are becoming more common and ubiquitous, with retailers increasingly placing the devices next to traditional consumer electronics products instead of alongside specialist technology products.
