Google Expands Gemini Enterprise for Lawyers as AI Battle for Legal Market Intensifies
Synopsis
Alphabet is adding legal-specific tools to Gemini Enterprise to help law firms automate routine and complex work while keeping client data secure and confidential, as technology companies compete for a growing US legal AI market.
Google is taking its enterprise AI push deeper into the legal industry, launching Gemini Enterprise for Legal as law firms accelerate efforts to use artificial intelligence across research, contracts and other professional workflows.
The new offering is a plugin for Gemini Enterprise rather than a standalone application.
The latest addition to its portfolio combines specialised AI skills, agents and secure connections to legal technology platforms. It allows firms to automate routine work while keeping lawyers focused on complex decisions.
Google said the system is designed around the confidentiality and access requirements of legal work.
AI Moves Deeper into Legal Workflows
Gemini Enterprise for Legal can support tasks including contract review, regulatory monitoring, legal research, playbook creation and data discovery. Its agents can work with systems used by legal teams while inheriting existing permissions and access controls.
Google is also opening the platform to established legal technology providers. Connections include Thomson Reuters, Harvey and Legora, alongside document management, e-discovery and contract platforms.
The company said AI outputs can be grounded in authorised sources and include traceable citations which is an important safeguard in a profession where inaccurate information can carry significant consequences.
The platform is being developed with major law firms including Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields, Weil and Williams & Connolly.
Google said their involvement is intended to help shape tools around the practical requirements of sophisticated legal work.
Big Tech Competition Intensifies
Google's move comes as the legal sector becomes an increasingly important market for enterprise AI providers.
Anthropic has also expanded its enterprise offerings for legal professionals while Thomson Reuters recently introduced its own large language model trained on its legal research content.
Law firms are increasingly using generative AI for research, drafting and administrative work as they look for efficiency gains.
Google is extending the strategy beyond law. It also launched Gemini Enterprise for Financial Services with tools aimed at capital markets and corporate banking. The company said that additional industry-specific solutions are planned.
For Google, the legal launch is another attempt to turn Gemini from a general-purpose AI product into an enterprise platform embedded in specialised industries. For law firms, the bigger shift is from AI that simply answers questions to AI agents that can execute parts of professional workflows under controlled conditions.
