Synopsis

British AI chip startup Fractile is raising $600 million at a $6.5 billion valuation, supported by growing demand for AI inference chips and a supply deal with Anthropic.

British AI chip startup Fractile is in advanced talks to raise around $600 million in fresh funding at a pre-money valuation of $6.5 billion.

If completed, the deal would value the company at more than six times its valuation from just three months ago, reflecting strong investor confidence in the growing AI infrastructure market.

The funding round is still under discussion and its terms could change. Part of the investment will reportedly be made at a lower valuation.

Fractile declined to comment on the fundraising while AI company Anthropic also did not respond to requests for comment.

Anthropic Deal Boosts Investor Confidence

Fractile has reportedly secured an initial agreement to supply about $250 million worth of AI chips to Anthropic. The partnership is expected to expand over time although the chips are not expected to enter commercial use until 2027.

The startup last raised $220 million in May in a funding round led by Accel, Founders Fund and Factorial Funds. That investment valued the company at around $1 billion and was aimed at accelerating the development of its first generation of AI chips.

Founded in 2022 by Oxford roboticist Walter Goodwin, Fractile focuses on building chips designed for AI inference. This is the process of running trained AI models to generate responses or solve tasks more efficiently.

Competition Grows in AI Chip Market

Fractile is part of a new wave of companies developing specialised chips for AI inference. The market is currently dominated by Nvidia but startups are racing to offer faster and more cost-effective alternatives as demand for AI computing continues to rise.

The company says its technology could reduce the time AI systems take to generate answers and support applications beyond chatbots. These include scientific research, drug discovery and the development of new materials.

Other emerging players in the AI chip space include Cerebras Systems and startup Etched which highlights the growing competition in one of the technology industry's fastest growing segments.

As AI adoption accelerates across industries, investors continue to pour capital into companies building the hardware needed to power the next generation of AI applications.
