Synopsis

Canva has recorded another sharp valuation decline as AI-driven market changes and slower growth forecasts raise uncertainty over its long-term valuation and planned 2027 public listing.

Canva has suffered another sharp valuation decline as investors reassess the company's prospects amid rising artificial intelligence competition, adding fresh uncertainty to its planned 2027 public listing.

The Australian design software giant's internal valuation has fallen to US$31 billion (A$43.5 billion) from US$38.9 billion a year ago, wiping more than A$11 billion from its value.

Separately, venture capital firms Blackbird and AirTree reduced their valuation estimate by 17% to US$34.9 billion that reflects broader pressure on software companies adapting to the AI era.

The latest markdown follows Canva's decision to lower its projected revenue growth from 30% to 20% after delaying the rollout of new AI features to reduce operating costs.

Despite the setback, the company remains profitable and continues to invest in strengthening its AI capabilities before scaling new products.

AI Transition Reshapes Valuation Outlook

Canva said it deliberately slowed the launch of AI-powered features after finding the cost of serving AI tasks was too high. The company has since rebuilt parts of its AI infrastructure and claims to have reduced AI serving costs by 90%. Investors strongly believe that this move could improve long-term profitability.

Blackbird partner Rick Baker said the lower costs position Canva to deliver AI products at scale while maintaining sustainable unit economics.

The company also reported 25.2% year-on-year revenue growth in the June quarter reaching US$921.9 million. The numbers underscore continued business momentum despite slower growth expectations.

IPO Prospects Face Fresh Scrutiny

The valuation decline has intensified speculation over Canva's proposed 2027 Nasdaq IPO with analysts suggesting market sentiment will depend on whether the company can accelerate growth in the coming quarters.

The broader software sector has also come under pressure as AI disrupts traditional business models. Rivals including Figma and Adobe have experienced significant valuation declines while some industry observers believe AI-powered tools are reshaping the competitive landscape for design software providers.

Despite investor concerns, Canva remains financially strong. The company has been profitable for nine consecutive years and ended the June quarter with US$1.47 billion in cash providing substantial resources to support its long-term AI strategy.
