Synopsis

The latest funding round has more than doubled Etched’s valuation in less than a month, underscoring the rush to back specialised chips as AI inference demand grows.

AI chip startup Etched has more than doubled its valuation to $21 billion after raising $700 million in a new funding round. It reflects strong investor confidence in the rapidly growing market for AI infrastructure.

The latest investment comes less than a month after the company was valued at $10.3 billion in its Series C funding round.

The San Jose, California-based company said trading firm Jane Street led the latest round and was joined by major investors including Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz and Tiger Global.

The funding highlights growing demand for specialised chips that help run artificial intelligence models more efficiently as AI adoption continues to accelerate.

Chapter one

Focus on Faster and Cheaper AI Inference

Unlike companies that build chips for training AI models, Etched develops hardware designed for AI inference. Its the stage where trained models generate responses to user requests. The company says its systems help customers run AI models faster while reducing operating costs and energy consumption.

Kleiner Perkins Managing Partner Mamoon Hamid said inference is becoming one of the most important parts of the AI infrastructure market with performance increasingly measured by efficiency and cost rather than raw computing power.

Etched is one of several startups trying to compete with Nvidia which currently dominates the AI chip industry. The company now employs more than 400 people and has already developed a working chip.

Chapter two

Customer Interest Continues to Grow

Investor enthusiasm is also being supported by rising customer demand. Etched said it has secured more than $1 billion in customer contracts from public and private AI companies as well as cloud service providers.

Jane Street, besides being one of Etched's largest investors, has also become its first customer. The trading firm received its first AI server rack last month and has started using the technology in its own operations.

Despite the strong momentum, industry experts say building successful semiconductor businesses remains challenging. Michael Ashley Schulman, partner at Cerity Partners, noted that while Etched has promising technology and strong customer interest, history has shown that not every innovative chip company succeeds commercially.
