Synopsis

The Albanese government will establish an Office of AI to guide regulation, standards and governance for rapidly evolving artificial intelligence technologies.

Australia will create a national artificial intelligence framework that will help co-ordinate regulation for new AI technologies.

The policy will be supported by a new Office of AI that will oversee governance of the policy, developing technical standards and interagency regulation, and assisting in safe AI adoption across the economy.

The framework will address how to keep up with advances in AI technologies while promoting responsible innovation.

It will offer guidance on improving transparency, accountability, and risk management of high impact AI systems used across sectors such as health, education, financial services and government services.

Australia has to be ready to embrace the opportunities of AI and its risks by ensuring the use of the technology by its citizens is safe and beneficial, according to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Opposition Raises Concerns Over Regulatory Burden

AI has long been of interest to the Coalition which advocates for greater uptake and further policy focus on cybersecurity, productivity, growth and greater access to advanced AI.

Opposition leader Angus Taylor also has reservations about the workplace elements of the proposed framework which could slow the adoption of new tech. The government says the framework seeks a balance between the pace of innovation and protection of workers, companies and consumers.

With growing use of generative AI in both the private and public sectors, Australia is following the trend of other countries that have implemented frameworks such as that of the European Union, the UK, and Singapore.

The Office of AI will also act as the central co-ordinating agency for the policy and the link with industry and researchers, monitoring new AI developments as it assists Australia to implement its broader long-term AI strategy.
