Synopsis

Spotify is adding Playlist Notes that allow users and editors to explain their song choices across popular playlists, making music discovery more personal.

Spotify Playlist Notes are coming to iOS and Android and letting users add notes to songs, podcast episodes and audiobooks on playlists that they create or collaborate on.

The feature that was unveiled on August 17 is set to be available in over 100 markets. Spotify editors will add their notes to specific tracks on a number of popular playlists, while the Editor Notes and Editor Profiles will be accessible to users who are 16 years old or older in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

The note-adding feature will be available on playlists such as Today’s Top Hits, RapCaviar, Hot Country, All New Pop, Mint and Fresh Finds Hip-Hop, according to Spotify.

Spotify Playlist Notes will help explain the rationale behind the items added to personal or collaborative playlists, while for editors it will give additional context beyond the track selection.

The launch of the feature is part of Spotify’s plan to scale the Playlist product in response to the heightened user demand for the service.

Playlist Scale Meets a Growing Streaming Market

Spotify’s playlists have been attracting global attention and popularity as the company reported that more than 10 billion playlists have been created on the service. Moreover, the company states that nearly 500 million people are subscribed to someone else’s playlist, while there are over 45 million collaborative playlists actively used each month.

Spotify’s recent financial performance, which was reported on August 4, demonstrates that the company’s focus on the playlist area has paid off. It has 300 million Premium subscribers and 777 million Monthly Active Users (MAUs) as of Q2 2026.

Revenue increased by 14% year-over-year (YoY) to €4.8 billion, while Operating Income was €655 million with a Gross Margin of 33.4%.

Spotify Playlist Notes will be available to users in all of the company’s markets, both existing and new, which currently comprise 184 countries and regions.

In addition, the global music market has also seen growth, with recorded music revenue rising by 6.4% year-over-year (YoY) to reach €31.7 billion in 2025, according to the IFPI Global Music Report 2026. Paid subscription audio streaming revenue rose by 8.8%, the report added.

The U.S. remains the largest recorded music market, followed by Japan and the U.K., according to the report. In fourth place is China, with Germany and Australia taking thirteenth and nineteenth places globally. The figures highlight the potential of the media, entertainment and digital services market in which Spotify Playlist Notes will be available to U.S. and Australian-based businesses.
