Australia fire breaking news: Australia’s fire update has turned into gale news. Massive fires are burning out of control in Victoria’s Otways region. In Australia, campers and residents have been issued a ”Leave Immediately” order following the Great Otway National Park on Saturday. Cape Otway fire and Carlisle River Fire are moving quickly south-easterly and creating “tempestuous” circumstances. According to regional sources, the wind is blowing fast and fiercely, and visibility is reduced. Geelong Emergency crew personnel were dispatched to assist local firefighting in the dense bush struggling to contain the wild blaze. Meanwhile, the Otway region has been subject to another violent act just a few kilometres away from several other threatening fires.
While the Otways confront the greatest fire risk so far today, other Victorian states are already recounting a terrible scenario. Following Friday’s “Catastrophic” forest fires that raged across the countryside, Harcourt suffered the hardest beating. The fire, named Ravenswood, has burnt through Otway near the town south of Bendigo, destroying over 50 configured constructs. Streets appeared to be war zones after the fast-moving flames burned through them. Central Victoria is the spot where the Longwood blaze has ravaged nearly 36,000 hectares and ruined at least 30 properties in the town of Ruffy. Livelihoods have been damaged, including family homes, workstations, agricultural equipment and machinery. Three humans are still missing, although numerous structures were lost to fire.
Record Heatwave Fuels National Emergency
The summer bushfire crisis in Australia is being ignited by a record-breaking heatwave sweeping the region for four straight days. Temperatures reached 42°C in Melbourne on Friday, while some areas of the north soared to a frying-point of 45°C. The Victorian Premier, Jacinta Allan, has announced a state of disaster, which grants emergency services greater authority to relocate people out of harm’s way.
And the heat has not only worsened the fire in Australia, but it has also placed enormous pressure on the power grid. Power has gone out to more than 22,000 homes and businesses across Victoria, the majority in the eastern region of the state. With additional lightning expected to strike over the weekend, officials warned that more fires might start at any time.
Travel Warning: Major Roads Closed
The bushfires have wreaked havoc on the roads, with the Great Ocean Road now closed between Apollo Bay and Lavers Hill. The police are advising people to avoid the Otways community altogether as fires continue to spread toward the coastline. Many other local roads are closed and travellers are being advised to check before they set out.
The Hume Freeway linking Melbourne to Sydney had been closed for some time because of the Longwood fire, but has now partly reopened. But smoke and falling trees continue to make driving unsafe in many fire-affected areas. Farmers who have been cut off from their farms are sharing stories of heartbreak as they wait to return and check on their livestock, many thought to be killed by the flames.
