He digitally assaulted a friend's girlfriend at a Melbourne residence on January 14 2024 after impersonating her boyfriend in a darkened bedroom. He fabricated an Uber receipt to conceal the offence. Tom Silvagni is the son of AFL legend Stephen Silvagni and sibling to St Kilda player Jack. His father is honoured in the AFL and Carlton Hall of Fame.
The son of AFL legend Stephen Silvagni has now been revealed as the individual found guilty of rape. Tom Silvagni's identity had been kept confidential during his rape trial. However, the suppression order was removed today by Victorian County Court Judge, Andrew Palmer. Silvagni is Stephen's son. On December 5 he was convicted of two rape charges.
Man Denies Raping Friend's Girlfriend
He refuted that he digitally assaulted his friend’s girlfriend at his Melbourne residence on the morning of January 14, 2024. The jury heard the woman had intercourse with her boyfriend at the residence. However, he arranged an Uber. Departed from the place just before 2 am. Silvagni then provided information. He informed the woman that her boyfriend would be coming upstairs as his Uber had been called off.
However, Silvagni was the one who went into the bedroom shortly afterwards. Pretending to be the woman's boyfriend he sexually assaulted her using means. Not once, but twice. A day later he altered an Uber receipt. To create the impression that the victim's boyfriend departed the house after 2.30 am. Silvagni faced rape charges in June 2024 initially. Yet his attorneys got his case dismissed in the magistrates’ court.
Repeated Reversals of Suppression Order
Following a hearing he was mandated to face trial in February 2025. His defence was more requested to maintain the suppression. In May, the suppression was revoked by a County Court judge. However, Silvagni's legal team promptly challenged this ruling, in the Supreme Court. In August the justice ruled in his favour. Silvagni's identity remained concealed throughout his two-week trial in November.
The media were also prohibited from releasing any content that revealed the Silvagni family’s identity. This restriction extended to all references connected to the AFL. Silvagni acted as an AFL player agent at Kapital Sports Group. He is the brother of St Kilda player Jack. Their father Stephen won two premierships with the Carlton Football Club. He earned induction into both the AFL and Carlton Hall of Fame. Their mother Jo Silvagni was a known television figure in Australia. This contributed to the controversy surrounding the suppression order. Some believed the family's notoriety should not shield Tom Silvagni's identity. Others contended the order was necessary to shield the family from media attention.
The victim endured an ordeal, she was forced to recount the incident, share her account with the jury and withstand all efforts by the defence to discredit her. However, the jury trusted her testimony. They declared Tom Silvagni guilty on both charges. This verdict leads to sentencing. He may serve a lengthy prison term since rape carries severe consequences, under Victorian legislation.
The altered Uber receipt signalled planning. Silvagni attempted to conceal his actions. He aimed to create the impression that the boyfriend remained at the house fully aware that this would make the victim question her recollection. It was a tactic; nevertheless, the investigators uncovered the fraud. The actual Uber data revealed the boyfriend departed before 2 a.m. thereby confirming Silvagni's falsehood.
