The aircraft, reportedly equipped for medical transport, had arrived earlier in the day from Athens, Greece, with a brief stop in Pula, Croatia, and was scheduled to return to Lelystad, Netherlands. Shortly after departure, around 4:00 PM, the plane began to bank sharply, flipped midair, and plummeted nose-first into the ground, erupting into flames.
Eyewitness John Johnson, who was at the airport with his family, described the horrifying moment:
"The plane took off smoothly, but seconds later it started turning to the left and then flipped upside down before crashing. There was a massive fireball. Everyone, including the children, was in shock."
Social media footage captured the aftermath, showing thick black smoke rising from the crash site, completely engulfing the wreckage. Several eyewitnesses noted they had waved at the pilots moments before the disaster, adding an emotional layer to the already tragic scene.
Emergency services, including Essex Police, firefighters, and medical personnel, were swiftly deployed. In a statement, police confirmed they had evacuated nearby locations such as Rochford Hundred Golf Club as a safety precaution. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched a thorough inquiry, deploying a multidisciplinary team specializing in aircraft operations, engineering, human factors, and data analysis.
As of now, no official information has been released regarding the number of passengers on board or potential casualties. Zeusch Aviation acknowledged the incident and stated its full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
"Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic event," the airline said in a brief statement.
David Burton-Sampson, Member of Parliament for Southend West and Leigh, expressed his concern on social media:
"I urge everyone to stay clear of the area and let the emergency services do their job. My thoughts are with all those involved."
All flights to and from Southend Airport have been cancelled or diverted to other airports. EasyJet confirmed disruptions to its scheduled services, advising passengers to contact their airlines for updated travel information.
The airport authorities have not yet provided a timeline for reopening but promised regular updates.
“We are working with the authorities and will resume operations as soon as it's safe,” read a statement from Southend Airport.
The aviation community and local residents remain on edge as the investigation continues. The incident has reignited conversations about aircraft safety and emergency preparedness, particularly for specialized medical flights operating within civilian airports.
