Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg contends the true reason the world's best AI scientists are flocking to his firm isn't salary alone, it's the raw amount of computing power Meta can provide. In an interview with The Information, Zuckerberg discussed how researchers today don't value GPU access as much as they used to care about organizational status or job titles.
"Individuals are demanding the smallest number of individuals reporting up to them and the largest GPUs," Zuckerberg explained, explaining how AI engineers now select their employers based on who will provide them with the quickest tools to work on. In one case, a researcher allegedly said to another firm, "Come back when you have 10,000 H100 GPUs," Nvidia's much-coveted AI chips.
Meta is Constructing the World’s Largest Data Centers
To sustain this demand, Meta is investing heavily in infrastructure. Meta is constructing some of the world's largest data centers. Its first, named Prometheus, is set to begin operation by 2026 and will provide more than 1 gigawatt of power. Another campus, Hyperion, will reach 5 GW in a few years' time, about the amount of power required to power several small cities.
Zuckerberg has indicated that Meta will spend "hundreds of billions of dollars" on compute infrastructure over the long term to gain a leadership position in the race to develop artificial general intelligence—or what he refers to as "superintelligence."
The magnitude of this investment ensures that Meta is not simply competing with industry peers such as Google and Microsoft it wants to dominate the sector.
Top AI Talent Joins Meta's Superintelligence Labs
Zuckerberg's plan is already recruiting some of the most brilliant names in AI. Jason Wei, who had been working on reasoning-based models, recently left OpenAI and Google to join Meta's Superintelligence Labs. He was followed by Hyung Won Chung, yet another high-profile AI researcher.
Wei allegedly joined Meta after witnessing the extent of compute Meta could provide—a huge consideration in how quickly researchers can tinker and publish.
Meta is also putting money into improved data tools, such as its recent $14.3 billion deal with Scale AI to enhance training data. For Zuckerberg, it's evident: money is important, but computing power is even more so.
