Hundreds of individuals marched through the streets of Los Angeles today to demonstrate against Trump's immigration raids. Thousands of people marched downtown, carrying signs and chanting "ICE out of LA" and "Trump out of LA" as they made their way to government buildings.
The protests began after union leader David Huerta was arrested in an immigration sweep on Friday. On Tuesday, he walked out of jail after posting $50,000 bail. Huerta operates a large workers union in California and was busted when the feds claim he blocked their vehicle during a raid. His union claims he was peacefully observing what was happening.
As Huerta was released, he appeared tearful and apologized to the union members. He told them he never intended to be arrested and hoped he hadn't put anyone at risk.
President Sends in the Military
It really hit the fan when President Trump dispatched 700 Marines to Los Angeles without even consulting California's governor first. This hasn't occurred in 60 years - deploying military troops when the state's top official has said no.
Trump's man who runs the military, Pete Hegseth, claimed they had to send the Marines because California will not keep federal agents safe. The Marines were dispatched from a base south of LA named Camp Pendleton.
California Governor Battles Back
Governor Gavin Newsom got extremely angry about this. He's suing Trump and referred to him as crazy and power hungry. Newsom accuses Trump of violating the law by deploying troops without consulting the state first.
Newsom now claims Trump is planning to deploy 2,000 additional troops to LA. He believes Trump is merely trying to seem tough rather than actually doing something to aid security.
Police Claim Protests Spiral Out of Control
The police began sending some demonstrators away, saying they had to go because it was getting out of hand. LA's police chief explained that having the Marines arrive makes his job more difficult because no one notified him of their arrival.
The police chief has plenty of experience dealing with large crowds - they've been doing it for years. But now he is concerned about everyone getting mixed up with military personnel running around as well.
Mayor Says Things Still Calm for Now
LA Mayor Karen Bass reported that the protests have remained peaceful to this point. No one was injured and there's no fighting going on. But she's concerned things could deteriorate when it gets dark outside.
Several hundred people demonstrated downtown earlier today to back Huerta and protest immigration raids.
Other Cities Having Issues
It's not LA alone that's having problems. Way up in San Francisco, more than 100 individuals were arrested on Sunday as protests grew out of control. One officer was sent to the hospital but he's fine now.
City officials continue to urge everyone to remain calm. They fear that if things are allowed to become violent, people will pay attention to the fighting rather than hearing what the protesters really have to say.
