Synopsis

Tesla has withdrawn its notice to terminate a graphite supply agreement with Australia’s Syrah Resources after months of negotiations over product quality concerns. Syrah said Tesla accepted that the company had demonstrated progress producing conforming active anode material samples from its Vidalia facility in Louisiana. The agreement involves supplying 8,000 metric tons of graphite anode materials over four years and is considered important for expanding non-Chinese battery supply chains. Tesla still retains the right to terminate the deal if final qualification requirements for the Vidalia materials are not achieved.

The Tesla rewrites Syrah graphite deal and puts an end to months of negotiations. Tesla has finalized a development that ends its around product quality concerns.

Tesla and Syrah Settle Supply Agreement Dispute

The resolution of the Tesla Syrah Resources graphite deal update for 2026 came after Syrah Resources confirmed that Tesla has withdrawn its notice of intent to terminate the two companies' graphite supply agreement. Syrah had been in negotiations with Tesla over an offtake agreement for months following the electric vehicle powerhouse expressing concerns about material quality.

Syrah said Tesla also acknowledged the company had made advances in producing acceptable active anode material samples from its Louisiana-based Vidalia plant anode material graphite facilities. The decision to withdraw the Tesla notice of default on graphite follows four separate delays in resolving the dispute.

Syrah will supply a total of 8,000 metric tons from the Louisiana facility under the Tesla offtake agreement signed in 2021. The plant is the only non-Chinese graphite supply US operations and the only significant producer of vertically integrated large scale US operations capable for EV battery supply chain Australia and the United States.

Why the Dispute Happened

In July 2025, Tesla filed a default notice after allegations about conformity issues with active anode material samples supplied from the Vidalia facility. The companies spent months negotiating and repeatedly agreed to push back the deadline for addressing it.

Tesla now accepts that enough work has been done at the facility, Syrah said. The miner added, however, that Tesla is still entitled to accelerate termination of the agreement if final qualifications of Vidalia materials cannot be met.

Expert Take

The agreement removes uncertainty around a Tesla Syrah Resources graphite deal previously set for supply in 2026. The development also reveals wider attempts to strengthen operations in the U.S. supply of non-Chinese graphite as auto makers are ramping up EV battery supply chains, including production of U.S. and Australian battery materials.
