Synopsis

Filtr is bringing ad-blocking capabilities beyond web browsers to Apple devices through the new URL Filters framework in iOS 26 and macOS 26. The launch comes as digital advertising spending continues to grow globally and privacy-focused tools gain attention among consumers, developers and businesses.

Apple-powered privacy ad blocking service, Filtr has brought its web browser beyond. It allows iPhone, iPad and Mac to block various advertisements and tracking request to apps through its latest app available through Apple OS latest updates.

Calderolla is the creator behind the Filtr service, also creator behind one of the oldest ad blocker for Apple products, Wipr. The new Filtr utilise new URL Filters feature in iOS 26 and macOS 26 to block connection requests to ads/tracking domain before a connection is establish. Thus allowing it to filter across more applications than any of other conventional browser ad blocker.

The introduction of Filtr is evidence to companies involved in digital advertising, publishing and app development that privacy controls are evolving along the platforms available to us.

In the last few years, Apple has continually strengthened its privacy controls throughout its devices, in the meantime, regulators and users are continuously demanding more transparency on user data tracking by markets like the United States, Australia and Europe.

Filtr, an add-on to Wipr, costs 5 dollar for its subscription or 25 dollars lifetime buy. It requires regularly updated block list to perform the checking of requests in privacy-preserving ways. It doesn't need to collect personal user information in order to do its work.

The Filtr is not designed to block ALL ads. Any ads served by the domain the services belong to, will remain on screen.

Blocking those domain request could in fact impact how the apps function. As a result, not all social networks, streaming or tech app will appear empty of any ads even if Filtr is enabled.

This app was introduced to the public at a time when the digital advertising market remains a large one in the global economy.

Emarketer is predicting that the global digital ad spend will be greater than 800 billion dollars by 2026 due to the constant growth of mobile, video, retail media and social media advertising.

The application reflects a trend in Australia and the US markets where mobile apps remain a prominent feature of many consumers’ online activity.

The platform controls in a way which advertising can be viewed will potentially impact those who practice business in both countries.
