Key Highlights

  • Blue Origin Florida expansion includes a $600 million manufacturing investment at Cape Canaveral.
  • New facility will support production for the company’s New Glenn rocket program.
  • Project is expected to create around 500 aerospace and engineering jobs in Florida.
  • Commercial space activity continues growing as launch demand increases worldwide.

Blue Origin's Florida expansion plans are continuing to progress with a new $600 million manufacturing facility at Cape Canaveral and increased production capacity for the company's New Glenn rocket program as commercial launch demand continues to grow worldwide.

The project will provide an additional facility at the company's Rocket Park campus of 830,000 square feet, the company stated. It will be used to make upper-stage parts for New Glenn rockets used in satellite launches and for government missions.

The expansion is expected to generate some 500 aerospace and engineering jobs. Average wages that are associated with the project are expected to be over $98,000 per year, according to Florida officials.

Connect businesses with their customers

According to Reuters and the company update, the Blue Origin Florida expansion is a few months after the first orbital mission of its New Glenn rocket earlier this year.

The development, which Blue Origin calls “Project Horizon,” is the company's biggest Florida project since it began in the area in 2015, said Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp.

Currently, the company has 11 locations throughout Florida with nearly 4,000 of its employees working statewide. Since Blue Origin has come to Florida, it has also spent more than $2.3 billion with more than 500 Florida suppliers.

The commercial space activities continue to grow

The Blue Origin Florida expansion comes as more and more money is being invested in the commercial space sector. The world's space economy grew to about $570 billion in 2023, primarily driven by commercial launch and satellite and infrastructure business, the Space Foundation reported this year, in its annual space economy report.

In recent years, Florida has seen the number of launches grow, as firms such as SpaceX, Blue Origin and United Launch Alliance are beefing up their efforts on the Space Coast.

The project also coincides with the growing deployment of satellites by both governments and private companies related to communications, defence and Earth observation programs. In recent years, the programs have also grown with Australia's satellite and launch partners expanding within the country and with projects tied to national space manufacturing and research programs.

Contest for Heavy-Lift Rockets Heats Up

The Blue Origin Florida expansion is the latest in SpaceX's infrastructure expansion supporting its Starship program. The two companies are both expanding their production output amid rising competition for both commercial satellite launch and government contracts.

The Florida project will get support, via the state's Spaceport Improvement Program, operated by Space Florida and the Florida Department of Transportation, said Blue Origin.
