By January 2022, MSC became the world’s largest container shipping company and passed Maersk. Today, the family business has almost 900 ships. The ships can carry more than 5.5 million containers, and the company handles about one out of every five containers shipped in the world.
While container shipping built the base of the Aponte family business, Rafaela Aponte-Diamant showed her creative side in the cruise business. In 1988, MSC entered the cruise market by buying the ship Monterey. A year later, they bought Lauro Lines. By 1995, these operations came together under the MSC Cruises brand, a company that would eventually become the world’s third-largest cruise operator and the biggest one still privately owned.

Not content with just sea and land, MSC launched its air cargo division in 2022 to keep pace with rising demand for fast global delivery.
One of their boldest moves came that same year, when MSC bought Bolloré Africa Logistics for $6 billion, a deal that instantly made them a major logistics force across the entire African continent.
