Stripe Makes $8B AI Bet with OpenRouter Acquisition
Synopsis
The payments company is acquiring the AI platform as businesses look to cut rising model costs, with Stripe CEO Patrick Collison calling AI tokens the “central currency” for developers building AI applications.
Payments giant Stripe has agreed to acquire AI marketplace platform OpenRouter in a deal valued at slightly more than $8 billion, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The acquisition marks Stripe's latest move to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence sector where businesses are increasingly looking for cost-effective ways to build and deploy AI applications.
Although neither company officially disclosed the transaction value, the deal reflects Stripe's broader strategy of expanding beyond digital payments into AI infrastructure.
The fintech company has already introduced AI-focused products including token billing tools that help businesses monitor and manage AI model usage.
OpenRouter Plays a Key Role in AI Model Access
Founded in 2023, OpenRouter enables developers to access more than 400 AI models through a single interface. It allows them to compare performance, optimise costs and route requests efficiently.
The platform currently processes over 10 trillion AI tokens daily and serves a community of more than 10 million developers and businesses.
Stripe CEO Patrick Collison said AI tokens have become the core currency of modern AI applications. He also added that the industry's long-term growth will depend on using computing resources efficiently.
As companies adopt AI at scale, routing platforms such as OpenRouter have become increasingly valuable because they help organisations select the most suitable and cost-efficient AI models for different tasks.
A Deloitte report published earlier this year also projected that many large enterprises expect to consume more than 10 billion AI tokens every month by 2028. The report highlights the growing demand for AI infrastructure.
Stripe Expands Beyond Payments
The acquisition adds to Stripe's growing investment in artificial intelligence and follows several major strategic moves by the company. Earlier this year, Stripe reached a $159 billion valuation through a tender offer which reinforces its status as one of the world's most valuable private fintech firms.
OpenRouter has attracted backing from prominent investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures and CapitalG, Alphabet's independent growth fund. Meanwhile, Stripe recently teamed up with private equity firm Advent International in a reported bid to acquire PayPal for more than $53 billion which further signals its ambitions to expand its global technology footprint.
Businesses using Stripe processed $1.9 trillion in payment volume last year, representing a 34% increase from 2024.
