Synopsis

The launch gives Stripe’s roughly 1 million Australian merchants access to tools for managing and moving money globally, with the company adding about 37,000 merchants each month.

Stripe Treasury Australia launched its payments, currency holding and conversion, and payments to overseas beneficiaries service for local businesses on August 19.

The company will provide its services to one million Australian businesses as part of its merchant ecosystem. Stripe is set to onboard about 37,000 merchants monthly and will offer its financial services to both local and international banks.

Besides its billing platform called Metronome for Australian businesses, the company will introduce an upgraded payment credential protection service known as Radar to combat payment fraud and counterfeit payment instruments. Additionally, Stripe will process payments from Australian businesses to overseas recipients locally.

Chapter one

Exporting businesses are a focus

With the new launch, Stripe Treasury Australia users will be able to manage currencies within the same application where they make payments. According to Stripe, at the national level, only 2% of businesses are involved in international trade, with approximately 23% of Australian companies that use Stripe being engaged in exports at the time of announcement.

In other jurisdictions where Stripe Treasury has been launched, it has been offering the same services available in Australia, with the exception that stablecoins-backed Treasury balances are unavailable in Australia at launch.

The expansion is an added benefit for the U.S. businesses already using Stripe to process their payments as it would be easier for them to navigate the system, considering it already has millions of businesses on its platform.

Digital payments remain widely used

According to the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) Consumer Payment Behaviour in Australia report, Australians made 20% of all payments electronically last year, up from 4% in 2007 and 18% in 2022.

Businesses processed $1.9 trillion payments using Stripe’s software on behalf of their consumers in 2025, representing 1.6% of global GDP, an increase of 34% compared to 2024. The software was used by over five million businesses directly or indirectly, the company reported.
