Queensland Biotech Nbryo Secures $20M Seed Funding

Beef genetics startup Nbryo has raised another $10 million, taking its total Seed round to $20 million to expand its agricultural biotechnology platform.

Queensland-based cattle genetics company, Nbryo, has today announced that it has raised an additional A$20 million in seed funding, including up to A$2 million from the Queensland Government’s Sowing the Seeds of Farming Innovation Fund.

The A$30 million Sowing the Seeds of Farming Innovation Fund managed by QIC has invested in Nbryo as its first-ever investment.

This follows the initial investment by QIC Ventures in the Queensland-based cattle genetics company last year.

With a second close of A$10 million in seed funding during a first close in 2025 and A$8 million in March 2026, the cattle genetics company has raised a total amount of A$18 million. The company have raised a total of A$18 million with the first close of A$10 million and a second close of A$8 million in March 2026.

Nbryo has developed innovative technologies for the reproductive technologies for cattle, including in-vitro embryo production and embryo-transfer systems. The company has attracted an array of investors, including Gates Foundation, AgriZero and Tenacious Ventures, and others, including QIC Ventures.

Chapter one

Capital raised and cattle industry scale 

The cattle genetics company’s fundraising effort, which is referred to as Nbryo seed funding, follows a raise of over A$22 million by the company since 2024. The prior figure took into account the conversion of A$12.3 million in SAFE notes tied to its financing for 2025.

Nbryo has received over AUD18 million in grants for research and development from Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), Government programs and the Gates Foundation.

There is a huge domestic market for the cattle genetics company’s products.

Australia’s estimated cattle numbers on farms as of June 30, 2025, stood at 29.7 million heads, of which 27.6 million were beef cattle (Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australian Agriculture: Livestock, 2024–25).

Of these, beef cattle numbers in Queensland were estimated at 13.5 million while those in New South Wales were at 5.5 million.

Chapter two

Beef production remains high in 2026 

Cattle throughput is up and, according to the Meat & Livestock Australia’s Australian Cattle Industry Projections 2026, the national cattle herd is expected to peak at 30.783 million heads this year (2026).

Cattle slaughter is also forecast to rise to 9.45 million heads in 2026, according to MLA.

Meanwhile, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports that Australia slaughtered 2.4 million cattle and produced 749,010 tonnes of beef in the March quarter.
