Brad Lightcap, long time, open AI executive, said on Tuesday that he will leave the company to start a new venture. He said, in ben the past few months he has been considering what comes next, and what could influence OpenAI in its mission. He said the coming period would bring new areas that the world would need to address.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded to Lightcap’s announcement by saying he was looking forward to working with him on whatever comes next.

Lightcap’s Role Had Already Changed

Lightcap moved from his position as OpenAI’s chief operating officer to a role focused on special projects. He joined OpenAI in 2018 after previously working with Altman at venture capital firm Y Combinator.

OpenAI said Lightcap’s responsibilities had already moved away from the day-to-day management of larger organisations in recent months. As a result, the company does not expect his departure to have an impact on its teams.

His exit follows a similar announcement from Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of AGI deployment, who said in July that she would leave her full-time position and transition to a part-time advisory role following an extended medical leave.
