Key Highlights

  • Lambda, a cloud provider backed by Nvidia, has signed a $35 billion cloud-computing deal with Anthropic.
  • The agreement is for a Texas data center totaling approximately 350 MW of capacity.
  • The project is being developed by Hut 8 which used to do crypto mining now turned to AI data centres.
  • Anthropic also had a separate deal with Nscale worth $45 billion to rent out cloud computing AI power to be housed at Nscale’s data centre in West Virginia.

Anthropic Expands Cloud Computing Capacity

Anthropic, a rival AI research lab, has finalised a cloud-computing agreement valued at $35 billion for an Nvidia-supported cloud provider Lambda’s data centre in Texas. Hut 8, which stopped crypto mining to focus on AI data centres, is developing the project in Nueces County and has a capacity of about 350 megawatts, the source said.

Numerous media outlets such as Anthropic, Nvidia, Hut 8 and Lambda did not reply to requests for comment immediately.

Rising Demand for AI Infrastructure

Since the explosion of generative AI services, demand for computing infrastructure has soared, prompting tech giants to spend hundreds of billions on data centres containing advanced chips from Nvidia and other chipmakers.

Anthropic, which is also gearing up for an IPO, has been quickly increasing its computing capacity in anticipation of product demands like AI coding tool Claude Code. The company last week announced it would pay $45 billion to lease AI cloud computing capacity from Nscale’s West Virginia data centre campus.

The agreement aims to meet the rising demand for Claude. The Lambda deal will free up Nvidia capacity to meet increased needs for Anthropic’s Claude AI, the source said. Nvidia itself would lease the data centre, a source told The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the deal.

In July, Hut 8 disclosed a 15-year lease agreement with an “investment-grade customer” that has an estimated contract value of $19.6 billion in base-term contracts. Hut 8’s 1-gigawatt Beacon Point campus was subsequently revealed to be leased by Nvidia, Reuters reported later Monday.
