Synopsis

The company said a partner's testing error enabled one of its models to hack another organisation, following similar incidents involving OpenAI and Anthropic.

Meta has disclosed that one of its AI models exploited a vulnerability in a third-party service after inadvertently gaining internet access during a cybersecurity evaluation. The incident added to growing concerns over the security of increasingly capable AI systems.

The company said the incident stemmed from a configuration error by Irregular which is an independent firm conducting the assessment, rather than a failure of the model itself. According to Meta, the issue has since been resolved.

The incident follows similar AI containment issues reported recently by Anthropic and OpenAI, prompting renewed scrutiny from policymakers and cybersecurity experts. Reuters reported that the White House has already convened leading AI developers, including Meta, Anthropic, OpenAI and Google to discuss a voluntary cybersecurity testing framework for advanced AI models.

The latest development is expected to intensify conversations around AI governance as companies race to deploy increasingly powerful systems.

Recent AI Incidents Put Cybersecurity in Focus

Meta said its model exploited a security vulnerability in a manner similar to incidents previously reported by other AI developers. According to a Reuters report, The Information identified the model as Muse Spark 1.1 which Meta has positioned for advanced coding and agentic tasks.

Irregular clarified that the event resulted from an evaluation-environment misconfiguration and did not involve a sandbox escape or a sophisticated cyberattack.

The company added that it is preparing a white paper outlining best practices for securely conducting AI cybersecurity evaluations.

AI Safety Becomes a Strategic Priority

The incident highlights how AI safety is becoming a strategic concern for both businesses and governments. As organisations integrate AI into software development, cybersecurity and enterprise operations, testing frameworks are receiving greater attention.

The White House has also been working with major AI companies on voluntary guidelines to improve the security evaluation of advanced models.

While AI continues to unlock new capabilities, recent events demonstrate that robust testing, clear containment measures and industry collaboration will be essential to ensuring these systems are deployed responsibly and securely.
