Meta Hit With $567M Judgment in Teen Mental Health Case

Meta $567 million New Mexico teen mental health case has led to a New Mexico court setting up a $567 million fund to fund mental health treatment and prevention programs for children and adolescents.
The ruling also mandates that Meta implements further child safety features on both Facebook and Instagram, as the court determined that the social media platforms played a role in causing harm to children.
Meta has been fined a total of US$942 million in this case, as the new order is based on a civil penalty of US$375 million, which was imposed by a jury in New Mexico's consumer protection law in March. Meta plans to appeal the judgment.
Court Orders Funding and Safety Measures
New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez filed the lawsuit, claiming that Meta has not done enough to prevent kids from being exposed to harmful material and online exploitation.
Judge Bryan Biedscheid ordered US$420 million be spent over the next five years on mental health treatment, and the remaining money be spent on prevention programs, public education and mental health screening.
The court also mandated Meta to enhance age verification, impose stricter limits on adult-to-minor interaction, fine-tune reporting mechanisms for child exploitation, minimize notifications to teens, and add more protections for AI-powered chatbot functionality.
Meta has already implemented a variety of safety features for younger users and is "displeased" with the decision, it said, adding that it plans to take the matter to appeal.
Wider Regulatory Focus
As governments continue to expand their regulation of social media and its effects on children, the Meta $567 million teen mental health ruling in New Mexico is a recent development.
Over 40 states in the United States have filed lawsuits against Meta claiming that its functions on Facebook and Instagram were a driver of compulsive use and mental health problems for youth.
In other countries, regulators have begun to focus on online platforms, too. The EU has set obligations for the large digital platforms under the Digital Services Act, as Australia moves to legislation to ban children under 16 from having a social media account, and to more widely enforce online safety by the eSafety Commissioner.
Meta had second quarter 2026 revenues of US$47.5 billion, and net income of US$18.3 billion. The lawsuit against Meta has been filed in the State of New Mexico court and falls within the US$942 million in total liability, which includes the US$567 million abatement fund and the previous US$375 million jury verdict.
