Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he will raise the issue of new US tariffs on Australian goods next week with President Donald Trump after Washington imposed additional tariffs against trading partners, including Australia.
The United States announced fresh tariffs on goods from 60 trading partners, accusing the countries of not doing enough to stop trade in products produced with forced labour.
Australia Opposes Tariffs
The Albanese government has called the tariffs unjustified and wants them removed. Albanese was asked if he would be talking about the issue with Trump, and he said, absolutely. He said Australia would take it up at “every level” of the bilateral relationship with the US and had already begun doing so.
Australia Defends Supply Chain Standards
Albanese, in these statements said that Australia has robust modern slavery laws and is strengthening supply through stronger adverse clauses with significant new fines and penalties.
The new US measures impose a 12.5% tariff on imports from Australia and 37 other countries. 10% tariffs on the goods of 17 countries, while five other countries are subject to mixed tariffs. Albanese has said his government is committed to on the free, fair trade with the U.S. and revived tariffs last year after a call from Trump soon after the Labour election win.
