Synopsis

Matt Comyn’s annual remuneration climbed above $9 million after previously awarded incentives vested, as CBA staff continued negotiations over wages and conditions.

CBA CEO Matt Comyn's pay increased to $9.1 million in FY26, up approximately 30% from a year ago when he was paid $7 million, after previously earning incentives that have vested.

The increase followed as staff at Commonwealth Bank started wage discussions with employers about working conditions.

The increase in Comyn's pay came after the bank posted a record $10.98 billion cash profit for the year ended June 30, 2026, an increase of 7.1% from $10.25 billion in FY25.

Staff Pay Talks Continue

Comyn pay rise comes as the bank is in discussions with workers over pay as they have deals in place that see them being paid in packaged payments. Around 70% of CBA employees had received increases of up to 8.75% over three years, the Finance Sector Union said.

The union estimates that two-thirds of these workers would receive a pay rise below the rate of inflation in the first year. The number of CBA's employees with full-time equivalent was 51,714 as of 30 June 2016, according to CBA's FY26 results.

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data shows that the Wage Price Index grew 3.3% year-on-year to March 2026, with wages in the private sector contributing to a 3.3 per cent jump.

CBA Earnings Set the Context

CBA's earnings grew for the year, with the bank's pay increase announced alongside the results, despite challenges on the lending side, with impairments up 9 per cent to $788 million. Meanwhile, mortgage applications were down 15 per cent in May, and 28 per cent for investors, while the bank reported a net interest margin of 2.05%.

ABS data on the consumer price index (CPI) showed that annual inflation fell to 3.8 per cent in June 2026, from 4.0 per cent in May.

The pay data also gives a real-time insight into executive compensation at one of Australia's major banks for the broader market, with CBA's results also providing a context for the increase in light of the bank's most recent earnings and staffing figures.
