Synopsis

Swyftx has appointed Andrea Yuen as permanent CEO and Cathryn Lyall as chair, ending five months of interim leadership as the Australian crypto exchange strengthens its regulatory footing and prepares for its next phase of expansion.

Australian crypto exchange Swyftx has appointed Andrea Yuen as permanent Chief Executive and Cathryn Lyall as chair, ending a five-month period of interim leadership and giving the company a settled executive structure as it expands in a more regulated market.

Yuen and Lyall had been acting in their respective positions since April, when former CEO and Executive Chair Jason Titman departed as Swyftx cut about 15% of its workforce.

Yuen had shared the acting CEO role with co-founder Alex Harper, who will now return to his position as Executive Director.

Financial Services Experience at the Helm

Yuen brings more than two decades of financial services and consulting experience to the permanent role. Before joining Swyftx as Chief Financial Officer in January 2025, she spent more than nine years as a Managing Director at Lazard and about a decade as a partner at PwC.

Lyall joined Swyftx’s board in September 2024 and has experience across venture capital, fintech and corporate governance. She is a partner at Seed Space Venture Capital and serves on the boards of Wisr, The Index Mortgage Company and Redbelly Network.

Her appointment as permanent chair gives the company continuity at board level after she stepped into the acting position during the April leadership reshuffle.

Chapter two

Swyftx Moves Deeper Into Regulation

The leadership appointments come at an important point for Swyftx as Australia’s digital-asset sector moves further into the regulatory framework.

In July, the company secured an Australian Financial Services Licence from ASIC. The licence includes authorisation for non-cash payment facilities, potentially allowing Swyftx to expand into payment services for retail and business customers.

The exchange has also expanded beyond its core Australian operations, including through acquisitions in New Zealand and the US. Swyftx says it now supports more than one million customers across Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

With Yuen now confirmed as CEO and Lyall permanently leading the board, Swyftx enters its next phase with a leadership team focused on navigating regulation while pursuing growth across digital assets and adjacent financial services.
