Chapter one

Key Highlights

  • Abbott Laboratories is investigating two separate cyber incidents involving its Cancer Diagnostics unit and LabCentral portal.
  • The company said the incidents have not impaired its operations, clients or finances.
  • Anderson explained that an extortion group identified by the name ShinyHunters (also called ShadowByt3$), had claimed to have breached LabCentral.

Abbott Laboratories is investigating two unrelated cyber incidents, one in its Cancer Diagnostics business and the other linked to its LabCentral portal, with no effect on operations customers or revenue results.

The incident at its Cancer Diagnostics unit was contained to certain internal systems, the company said. Abbott also said that no other businesses, sites or systems were impacted and legacy Exact Sciences systems remain isolated from Abbott’s network.

LabCentral Portal Breach Under Investigation

Abbott also said in its filing that a hacker had accessed its LabCentral portal, a platform hosted by third-party services deployed by its core laboratory diagnostics business.

The majority of that is technical documents publicly available, such as product manuals, troubleshooting guides and specifications, the company said. It said that there is no evidence that sensitive customer or business information has been exposed. An extortion group known as ShinyHunters also called ShadowByt3$, has claimed responsibility for the breach.

Cybersecurity Response

Abbott said it is pursuing investigations into both incidents and has also retained external cybersecurity experts and law enforcement. The company said it does not anticipate any significant consequences of either cyber situation on its operations or financial results.

Abbott products are extensively used in healthcare and diagnostic labs, so cybersecurity is relevant to any health care provider or the entire supply chain for diagnostics, including Australian historical paths of such pathways.
