Synopsis

Nearly two-thirds of Australian small business owners experienced financial stress over the past year, yet most remain proud of their businesses and optimistic about the future, according to new research.

Small business financial stress is hampering business growth for many in the lead up to 2026, according to new research from BizCover’s Pride, Pressure and Personal Sacrifice: The State of Australian Small Business Owners 2026 report.

Almost half of all Australian small business owners surveyed said they had less than three months of cash on hand. As a result, 68% of small business owners said that they had made decisions to delay the expansion of their business, such as hiring people, or investing in new business initiatives, on account of these cash flow issues.

Over half of the survey respondents reported that they have experienced burnout from their business as a result of financial pressures and over 50% had experienced a severe cash flow crisis during the first three years of operation of their business.

Chapter one

Administrative demands add to financial strain

Businesses continue to devote a large part of their time to managing the finances of their small businesses, with nearly 80% of small business owners revealing that bookkeeping takes more time than initially anticipated, proving one of the more time-consuming business functions.

BizCover General Manager, Brad Miller, said business owners were also battling financial concerns while balancing the demands of their family, increase in household costs and the stresses of running a business. He added these issues went far beyond managing the books for a company.

Chapter two

Small businesses remain under broader economic pressure

The Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman estimates that 97.3% of all businesses are small (having fewer than 20 employees) according to Australian Bureau of Statistics data.

Australian Bureau of Statistics business indicators also suggest that many businesses continue to face declining trading conditions and increased costs of operations.

Similar trends are being reported overseas with small and medium-sized enterprises accounting for 99% of all firms in OECD countries and employing two-thirds of the workforce, where access to working capital remains a major concern.

However, the BizCover report found that even amidst financial strain, a large majority of owners remain committed to their businesses.

More than 85% reported that they were proud of the work they do and nearly three quarters of business owners were confident in their business over the coming 12 months, even though many businesses still maintain cash reserves at a low level.
