PM Albanese Marries Haydon in Surprising Lodge Ceremony
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese married Jodie Haydon on Saturday in an intimate ceremony at The Lodge, making him the first Australian Prime Minister to wed while in office. The low-key event surprised many in Canberra as staff prepared the grounds for what became the first wedding ever held at the official residence. Albanese and Haydon met five years ago at a Melbourne dinner and have lived together at The Lodge for most of that time, often accompanied by their dog, Toto. Their engagement was announced in February 2024 with a selfie taken inside the residence. Albanese joins a small group of world leaders who married while serving, including Boris Johnson in 2021 and U.S. President Woodrow Wilson in 1915. The Lodge, built nearly a century ago, has hosted countless dignitaries but never a wedding, until now. For Albanese and Haydon, it was a natural choice, being the place where their life together has unfolded.
On Saturday Anthony Albanese wed Jodie Haydon in Canberra at The Lodge. The nuptials caught much of the city off guard. The official residence had been bustling with activity throughout the morning. Staff trimmed the lawns. The lavender bushes were blooming vibrantly. The setting appeared ideal for a cottage wedding. This marriage signifies several firsts, in history.
How They Met
The pair's common past extends over five years. During a fall evening, they met each other at a dinner in Melbourne. Their connection developed from that meeting. Throughout the majority of the five years, the Lodge has been their residence. They have enjoyed evenings there alongside the prime ministerial dog Toto.
Albanese unveiled their engagement with a selfie that was taken in the dining room of the house in February 2024. The day when the couple appeared at the venue to hold a formal press briefing thanking the people for their support.
First PM to Marry While in Office
Among the 31 people who have served as Australia’s prime minister since Federation, Albanese was one of three without a spouse. John McEwen assumed the role as a widower following Harold Holt’s disappearance in 1967. It was not until 2010, Julia Gillard secured a leadership position. However, Albanese is the first, in this category to get married while holding office.
He joins an exclusive group of democratically chosen leaders who tied the knot while holding office, including those globally. Boris Johnson was the very first UK prime minister in years to decide to get married during his tenure. He and Carrie Symonds got married at Westminster Abbey in 2021 with a very small number of people watching their wedding. In fact, before Johnson, it was only twice that maverick singletons of the 18th and 19th centuries had tied the knot under their roof.
The latest US presidential marriage within living memory occurred over a hundred years ago. On December 18 1915 Woodrow Wilson tied the knot with Edith Bolling Galt at her residence, in Washington DC. When Pierre Trudeau quietly left under the pretext of a ski vacation in 1971 he became the Canadian prime minister to get married during his tenure.
Upon the announcement of the engagement Peter Dutton humorously remarked that the wedding would be Australia’s celebration. "I’ll be tossing roses ahead of you, prime minister, " he said. Anything necessary to secure an invitation to the wedding.
The Lodge's First Wedding
For a century the Lodge has been located at 5 Adelaide Avenue in Deakin witnessing a significant portion of Australian history. International dignitaries and government officials have walked its corridors during receptions and social events. However, until Saturday it had never been the venue for a wedding.
Back in 1955 when an event of this scale occurred, it was only a mere coincidence that Heather Menzies, the daughter of Robert Menzies, was at the place very early in the morning just before her wedding with diplomat Peter Henderson. Along with her father, they altered the scene from the prime minister's residence to St Andrews Presbyterian Church. Many people came to the church to see the event. The party of the Hendersons was at University House at the Australian National University.
Still, the Lodge was perhaps a natural choice of wedding venue for Albanese and Haydon: it has been their home and the setting for their life together.
