On Sunday climate activists blocked coal vessels at the Port of Newcastle. By 4:30 pm NSW Police had detained 141 individuals and among them 18 children were involved in the day rally. Rising Tide protestors used kayaks and various small boats to demand taxes on fossil fuel earnings and the expiration of approvals, for coal mines. Each year the port exports 150 million tonnes of coal abroad.
Adults Are Prosecuted for Offences
Authorities detained 123 adults with the majority facing charges. These allegations were filed under the Crimes Act and Marine Safety Act. Footage from Sunday displayed two individuals arrested from the side of a boat. They revealed a banner stating “phase out coal and gas.” The Port Authority of NSW reported disruptions to four ships on Sunday. Among those vessels two were unrelated, to coal.
Zack Schofield, an events coordinator, at Rising Tide mentioned that their goal was to halt coal vessels from entering the Port of Newcastle. “We managed to achieve this today ” Schofield stated. He criticized the government for persistently approving new coal and gas mining projects. According to him the government is ignoring to shield citizens from the severe effects of climate change. “When the government lets us down the people have to stand up ” he added.
Boat Hits Police Jet Ski
According to the police, the boat which collided with the police jet ski was being driven by a 26-year-old protester. The jet ski was following the boat that had ignored a stop signal. The boat had entered a zone from which it was prohibited to go by the police.
NSW Police set up the exclusion zone for safety reasons and to allow shipping to continue. Police had been warning all along the weekend that no one would be allowed to enter the restricted zone. At 11:20 a.m. On Sundaya dispute erupted at Foreshore Park. Authorities reported that those who attended the circumstance were engaged in the incident.
What Authorities Stated Regarding Rights
In a declaration about the protests NSW Police expressed their recognition and acceptance of individuals rights to expression and peaceful gathering. However for NSW Police the primary concern is consistently the protection of the community. The statement emphasized that there will be no leniency, towards unlawful behavior.
The protests lasted for days. Tens of thousands of individuals from over Australia gathered in Newcastle. Coordinators referred to the movement as the climate action movement that will happen in Australia this year. Before the water protests the event consisted of demonstrations, concerts and meet-ups, at Foreshore Park. More than 7000 people were expected to attend the event by the end of the weekend.
Why This Port Matters
The Port of Newcastle plays a role in the NSW economy and Australias coal export industry. Coal vessels frequently depart from the port transporting millions of tonnes of coal to international purchasers. Protesters argue that this activity worsens climate change urging the government to halt the approval of coal mines and to levy substantial taxes on coal companies using the revenue to support a shift away, from fossil fuels.
