Mourners Boo Albanese At Bondi Beach Attack Memorial Service

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has reportedly been booed by an agitated crowd who assembled at Bondi Beach as part of honouring the victims of last week’s gun attack, which specifically targeted a Jewish Hanukkah festival event held at the beach.

Sunday was a national day of reflection to remember the 15 people who were killed in the shooting chaos that also caused the injury of other people. At 6:47 pm which was the exact time of the beginning of the terrorist attack, a minute of silence was observed. All the TV and radio stations were also there having a minute of silence.

The crowd booed the Prime Minister at the Memorial Event

Attending the memorial service, also heavily protected by police, including snipers on top of buildings and police boats on the water, were tens of thousands of people, including Albanese and other leaders.

Albanese was booed when he came in and also when the speaker referred to his name at the remembrance ceremony. Albanese was at the very front row, and on his head, he had a kippah, which is a traditional Jewish head covering.

Albanese has been hammered by his enemies, who have fabricated that his centrist, left government has ill-managed the situation with a rise in antisemitism that has been going on since the war in Gaza. The government has maintained that it has “consistently condemned antisemitism” in the past two years and also passed a law that criminalises hate speech. The Iranian ambassador was also expelled by the government earlier this year over allegations that Tehran planned two antisemitic arson attacks.

Father of ‘Bondi Hero’ at Memorial Service

The father of Ahmed al Ahmed, known as the ‘Bondi Hero’ for his action in wresting a gun from one of the aggressors, was also in the commemorations. Officials urge Australian citizens to light a candle on Sunday night, marking the beginning of the eighth and final day of the Jewish festival of lights.

New South Wales Premier, who had received cheers and appreciation during the memorial, stated, “This attack has had, as its intention, to marginalise, to scatter, to intimidate, and to fear. You have reclaimed Bondi Beach for us.”

Albanese Announces Review of Law Enforcement Agencies

Albanese made the announcement of the review regarding the law and intelligence agencies in the country earlier on Sunday. According to Albanese, the review that will be conducted by the former head of Australia’s spy agency will examine whether the federal police and agencies have “the right powers, structures, processes and sharing arrangements in place to keep Australians safe”.

The attack has, however, revealed loopholes in background checks of gun licenses, which policymakers claim they will address. Albanese has also launched a nationwide gun buyback, but gun safety experts insist that despite having one of the world’s strictest gun control laws, there are loopholes there as well.

The shooting is being probed by the police as a terror attack against Jews. National patrols and security measures by the police have been increased to protect against further antisemitic attacks. The police think that the attackers acted under the influence of the radical Sunni Islamic State organisation.

“The ISIS-related terror attack last Sunday reiterates the rapidly changing security environment for our country. Our security forces have to be placed in the very best position for them to cope,” Albanese said in a statement. The review, he further explained, would be finished by April endpoints.

The Bondi Beach incident was the most horrific in a series of antisemitic incidents in Australia. There have been incidents of attacks on synagogues, buildings, and cars since the war was launched in October 2023 by Israel in response to an attack by Hamas.

Albanese criticised rallies against immigrant numbers occurring today in Sydney and Melbourne. At the location, Sajid Akram, 50, the presumed gunman, was shot and killed by the police. Police shot the son, who was 24 years old, Naveed Akram, and he came out of a coma on Tuesday. He has been indicted with 59 counts, including murder and terrorism, related charges, as per the police statement.
